Are you serious? I was going to go to it today but figured with the score from last year (15-7) there was no point. Rats. That would have made my day to watch UVa lose.
What was the score?

"Junior goalie Bruce Bickford made 22 saves in last season's contest."
Sounds like Bickford may have had a BIG influence in this years game. Won't know until someone releases some stats.
But hey, its always good to see UVA loose.

It might just be a simple matterof Billings, Rubeor, and Thompson being just a cut below Ward, Dixon, and Poskay. With one of those players; Va wins this game. That's what good players do, or rather outstanding players. They step up and win the game. That's what Mat Ward did.

wow...some VERY interesting stats...
UVA was 2-9 on man up
Drexel had 10penalties totalling 7:30...and UVA only put 2 in...
Virginia couldn't hit the broadside of a barn...46 shots...27 on net...10 goals...
Kip Turner was a sieve...6 saves and 10 Goals allowed...
anyone actaully at the game can report on Kip and why his numbers were so poor?
:jawdrop: I was in disbelief when I read that on IL. It was all Rubeor (4,4!) Gladding (2,1) and Billings (3,1). Only one other person even scored a goal, and Drew Thompson only had 1 assist. Doesnt look good for them
goalieskcickay
02-18-2007, 04:29 PM
Yes! At least I had Rubeor up for fantasy... on a more depressing note, I also had Kip Turner up...(.375 save percentage)
Wait, is this an actual game, or just a scrimmage? Are they still going to be at the face off classic?

Kip Turner= overrated. You cant let in 2 goals with 10 seconds left thats just terrible.
^ Scrimmage and yes thats final although it might not be a good game, that wasn't really set up for the top 4 teams, it just worked out that way, it was set up to commemorate the famous series between hopkins-princeton and syracuse-Uva that use to start the season.

Don't forget Mike Culver, now UVA's defense arguably relies on Matt Kelly

Hold on, wasn't the score 11-10??
4+4+2+1+3+1+1 DOES NOT equal to 10. What's going on????
FYI, Drexel goalie had 17 saves, incredible. UVa has a lot of disappointments this season.
VIRGINIA - GOALS: Ben Rubeor 4; Garrett Billings 3; Danny Glading 2; Brian Carroll 1
ASSISTS: Ben Rubeor 4; Garrett Billings 1; Brian Carroll 1; Danny Glading 1; Drew Thompson 1
4+3+2+1+4+1+1+1+1 doesn't equal 10 niether..

It was definatley a regular season game (they dont even officially keep track of the score at scrimmages)- but yeah are you sure virginia will still be in the face off classic because IL ranks virginia hopkins syracuse and princeton as its top 4. If virginia drops out of the top 4 then maybe they're out of the tournament

You, my friend, need to go back to elementary school math. You don't add assists and goals. 4+3+2+1 = 10

KIP TURNER IS NOT OVERATED. He may have had a bad game jesus. Doesnt mean you have to sit here and trash him. Theres a reason hes at UVA. It expected of goalies to be on everygame they play as amiddy you can have an off day, but the othermiddys mellow itout notmaking youlook horrible. If a gaolie has a bad game it shows. Hes a great goalie and maybe nervous i dont know but dont go saying that.

Im a goalie myself thats why im saying as a goalie your job is to be on in those pressure situations, and with 10 seconds left you cant break down and give up 2 goals.

And where you there to watch the game? It could have been some near impossible shots for him to save, like a 1 v 1 right on the crease. I would have expected that a fellow goalie might be able to understand the hardships of playing keep

I doubt it. Nothing against Drexel, but if you're starting keeper for one of the premier Division 1 teams in the country, you have to get at least 50% against one of the weakest teams on your schedule.

Well sometimes after you've gone on such a terrific run as UVA did last year, you need something like this to be a wake up call.
I'm sure they are going to grease their gears, including Turner, and be a dominating force this season.
Or at least I'm telling myself this since Turner is my fantasy Gk.

The mantra at TLF that lacrosse is the greatest invention since bar soap and possibly even sliced bread notwithstanding, attendance to see last year's D1 champions was a mere 1076. I think the liquor stores in Virginia are closed on Sundays too, so UVa students (edited: I mean the ones who would otherwise have been in the stands) can't even use that as an excuse.
Further edit: It was not the sort of weather that would encourage one to sit outside all day. The air temperature might have broken the freezing mark, but not by much.

I don't think UVA felt cocky going into the game, but I think they were a little overrated by the press beofre this game, no? Well, I for one wasn't expecting the cinderella year for UVA this year, but this is suprising. I think losing Matt Ward, Matt Poskay, and Kyle Dixon will affect Virginia's offense (together, the had 103 goals and 52 assists). I'm not saying they lack o-power, they defenitley don't, but I think you know what I'm saying.
Good news: I decided at the last second not to have Kip as my fantasy goalie!
Bad news: I didn't have time to activate my fantasy team which had a great weekend. :thumbsdow

Although a huge upset, this isnt the "fall of UVA" or the "rise of Drexel." UVA just went through a harsh break down at the end of the game that cost them there winning streak. I wont be surprised if they make a stop in Baltimore on Memorial Day weekend. They lost alot of veterans (who filled many of the roles and positions troughout their careers) and this was their first game without them. My hats off to Drexel, but it was just a pleasant college surprise which we all look forward to come lacrosse season.

Really good article about Drexel. Drexel came to play with a chip on their shoulder; UVA didn't take it seriously at all. "I don't think they were ready at all," he [Colin Ambler] said Monday. "I looked over the midfield line during pre-game, and saw that they were goofing around, looking flat, not taking us seriously."

Wait.. I must be misinterpreting this.. what does he mean by, "Ambler, an attackman from Abington, Pa., who redshirted last season with a hip flexor injury, hit a pipe earlier in the game."
Hit a pipe?

colin ambler of drexel scored two goals in the final ten seconds.
Colin Ambler is Bob Ambler's son. Bob Ambler played on some good Drexel teams under Tom Hayes, who moved onto Rutgers, during the 70s. Bob Ambler is Drexel's all-time leading scorer.

An update, as of 3/9, Drexel lost to Lehigh. But it turns out Lehigh is ok, they lost by one to Penn and played Delaware tough.
So Drexel still remains ranked at #20, and it turns out that Virginia really tuned up Syracuse.
Meanwhile, I didn't believe it, but it turns out Delaware this year could surpass what they accomplished with John Grant. We'll see this weekend against Albany.
