While I would like to take credit for this tip, I cannot, yesterday a fellow official had in my mind a great idea for checking a long pole.
After you grab his stick and you are near the crease simply put the stick under the cross bar if it fits, it is not to long. Then for example, i am 5 foot 6 inches tall. If it comes up to my eyes or taller then I know the stick is legel.
Now I just have to measure the head of the cross and check the ball.
We also have been doing the C or Tail getting the shooter, so with the lead getting the long pole he has easy access to the cross bar/goal.
