OK here is the situation. During a game the other night A1 received a 1 MIN NR for a deep pocket found in a HS game stick check. While serving the penalty A1 and or his coach worked on adjusting his cross to make it legal. Team B Head Coach complained, stating that he was told the stick must stay on the scorers table until the penalty ended and only than could it be adjusted.
I did not agree as it would add an additional disadvantage to team A for use of player A1 if he did not have a second crosse over and above the one minute NR player / man down penalty by rule.

I did a quick survey of four other referees tonight to see what they understood about this rule. The vote was 2-2, for or against A1 or his coach being able to work on the crosse during the time serving penalty. Based on references above and assciated AR's I could not find a mechanic or rule to cover this. I want to make sure all our guys use the same standard / mechanic, so:

Question: What is the correct procedure / mechanic for what shall be done with the illegal crosse during a 1 min NR for a deep pocket?

P 52 section A differentiates between a deep pocket which is a 1 min because it is fixable and a non-pocket dimensional violation which is 3 min and non fixable. Only the latter is expected to stay at the scorer's feet according to that Section.

I suppose that you were correct, and the stick could return (and be subject to subsequent inspections, of course).

IMM, if an illegal crosse can be returned to a game after its deep pocket is corrected, it can return to the game even before its penalized player. Placing it at the table means it cannot be used for the rest of the game.

This is an excellent question.Page 61 NCAA says the 3-min NR penalty carries with it the requirement that the stick stay in the table area for the remainder of the game.
Page 62 AR 4 talks about the 1-min NR penalty and finishes by saying: "Crosse, if adjusted, may be returned to the game."

Based on the above I'd say the fixed crosse can be returned to the game at any time, even being used the man-down unit on the field!

The rules don't say you can't adjust the crosse during the penalty, so you can. Good question, though.

Thanks Guys. Unless over ruled by a newly developed training document this will go into our local training as the standard blessed by LAXREF.
