well. i'm currently a freshman at my highschool and i've played on our county travel team for 2 years and rec league for 3. this is my first time playing for the highschool and i've been told multiple times by coaches i have a shot at varsity my freshman year.
our tryouts are march 1st and i'm extremely nervous. i'd love to play for the varsity team and i work my butt off every day to try to make it. i also don't like talking about it though because i don't want to sound cocky ya know? so i don't really talk about it to any of my friends. when i get nervous, i don't play well though...
so any tips on tryouts? anything thats helped you with your tryouts would be great to know. thanks =]

Take a deep breath, breathe and relax. Really works, you have to go in believing you have what it takes to make varsity. Push yourself in every drill, listen closely to the coaches (DO NOT talk to your friend while a coach is talking) and give it your all. Remember that everyone misses a pass here and there, or lets a girl get by them. What coaches really look for is how well you recover after you make the mistake, so don't put your head down or drag your stick; hustle to go pick up the ball or get back in position. If you screw something up, learn why you screwed it up and try not to do it again.
Also something that will help you out not only in try-outs but also later in your career, is to pay close attention to experienced members and what they're doing. Pay attention to not only their fundamentals, but if you're confused on a drill, just take a look at what they're doing. If need be, ask for clarification.
Try-outs are intense your first day, but if you know you've come in prepared, you should be set. All you have to do is just be confident (easier said than done, I know).

I'm a freshman in highschool and i found out last night that I made varsity. I was so excited! I've been playing for two years and I was so happy to find out that I did. I know what you mean whenever you said you dont like talking about it because you think it makes you sound cocky. Just make sure you try out with an attitude where u know u can make it. It's so cool making varsity as a freshman, and I hope you do welll! good luck

In the end when its time to play, you just have to tell yourself you can play, and do your best.. You will do fine.
Don't shy away from taking on the better players on the team. Coaches like players that don't try to hide. Most of all don't try to do anything fancy that you are not able to do, play within yourself. Good luck!!!!

Our try outs are coming up (March 1st to be exact) and I think some of the best advice for try outs is to ALWAYS hustle. I mean, I know it sounds like a given. But I know a lot of girls (including myself) may not be the fastest or whatever, but NEVER show it. Not sure how much conditioning is involved in your try outs, but it's a large portion of mine, and that is my weak area (injuries)....always keep going and show effort. Even if you're the last person in all the sprints or what not, don't give up and always run through them. Don't give up just because you arent coming in first in drills.
Coaches also like to see that you're trying and not being lazy. Do not quit. Coaches are also noting your mentality! GOOD LUCK to everyone during try outs!

thanks guys. these have been really helpful.
we've been conditioning since november (like running stairs, long distance, etc) and the coaches always talk to us about mental toughness. i think most of you mentioned it so i'm going to try to always stay positivie.
thanks for the help =]

there was a freshman that tried out for our team and she was on the line.. could have gone jv or varsity. we ran a timed mile on the last day, and she was the 2nd person done. definitely impressed our coach and she made varsity. coaches like good athletes, so work hard in whatever running you guys are doing.
See coaches are different I like good lacrosse players. If you are a good runner and are a good lacrosse player all the better. Just because you can run a fast mile does not mean you are fast in lacrosse, which is what I like. Sprinting and distance running are two different things, IMHO. Another thing, you might to ask the returning varsity players what the coach likes and what tryouts are like so you have an idea going in.

Don't let anything get to your head. Whether it's during actual play time, running or talking w/ other girls. If you hear somebody trash talking, just shake it off, ignore it. You miss a pass, forget about it, get it the next time. In try-outs there isn't time to dwell on what happened. Run your heart out. Coaches wanna see you keep going and never giving up. Don't get frustrated either. And hustle to EVERYTHING. To the next drill, next line, toget water, to a huddle, ANYTHING. HUSTLE!! A coach hates nothing more than somebody who walks to where they are going. It shows weakness and laziness.
But most of all remember you are there to have fun and give it your best!!

Also, during tryouts hustle. If the coach tells you to move the goal-be the first one there to do it. Just make yourself standout. If you're a good player the coaches will see that and my coaches always said that it's not right if you're a little nervous. Once you start playing you'll be fine. Take it one step and a time and all of your hard work should pay off.

First thing is you need to relax...tryouts are nerve racking and its hard to play your best when you are nervous but you have to think to your self whats the worst that can happen if you dont have your most amazing tryout...you make JV and nothing is wrong with that it will give you a year to master your skills and make Varstiy the following year or be pulled up half way through. And I also agree with hustling...one thing my college coach taught me was always hustle...coaches don't like to see you walking from drill to drill, always jog, be the first to grab the balls and equipment. Another thing is have fun and dont put to much pressure on yourself because when you do that it becomes that much harder to play as well as you can...I am sure you will be fine! GOOD LUCK
