Why do people put tape near the butt of their shaft?

I was just curious as to why people put tape from the butt of their stick to maybe 6-10 inches up their stick?

I've seen a lot of college players do this and I don't really see a point. I understand tape for cradling near the throat and for passing/shooting near the middle, but I don't understand near the bottom.

usually for grip

so they know when they are at the bottom of their stick. and so they have grip down by their lower hand when they go to throw

if you mean like making another butt end it makes the shaft shorter without cutting it, which give you more control and a harder crank shot, and it works i love it.

I do it to an inch or two up in order to keep the tape on the butt end from slipping off, then an inch or two higher just for grip.

ya, its just to customize your bottom hand position which in turn sets up the rest of your throwing and shooting positions.
