Can anyone give me any tips for teaching young goalies how to throw with a deep bag?

Make sure the pocket's strung well with minimal whip for the depth. Then just practice practice practice and aim up a bit from where you'd normally throw and make sure they throw straight over hand, no sidearm stuff. Also be sure to keep your hands down the shaft further than a normal players stick (I've found that this just gives better power and aim for longer throws). How deep are we talking here anyways? At 2.5 or so balls deep, there shouldn't be any whip anyways.

I just had it strung for him at Stylin Strings. It's a combo of two leathers and mega mesh. It has coiled side strings and the throwing strings are much higher than the bag that's probably close to 3 balls. He had a problem with rebounds and I was hoping this was the answer. It's a bit hard for him to throw more than 10 yards or so.

hard to throw 10 yards eh? You might want to spend a lot of your time working on soft hands and a shallow pocket instead. Is there any benefit to the funny pocket you had put in it cause your description just makes it seem like unnecessary weight.

Also, can YOU throw normally with it?

i see a lot of young goalies worried about having a deep bag then they cant throw any pass but rainbow passes.
never good

i think you gotta make it shallower with less wip so you can laser outlets to midfield etc.

also make sure they are throwing overhand and not 3/4

first thing is its an SS pocket, look up outburst and read his threads on how good they are. ifhe was having problems rebounding you probably shuld have went with someone that knows that their doing like the goalie man. but for now pull the leathers a little tighter and the bottom string taught.

now, when you say how young, how young are you talking? because if its under like 6th grade i dont think theyll need a pocket any deeper than a ball in depth. it would seem kind of hard to throw with a deeper pocket, especially broken in deep pocket, when you dont have the strength or height. i would suggest limiting the pocket a bit, also if its under like 6th grade the shots should be low enough where the depth wont matter much.
