Hey everyone-read bold if u don't want to read a wall of text :read:
I started playing lacrosse in High school as a sophomore. For some reason I just liked defense because they got to hit people- I didn't put much thought into it after that season I realized I didn't like that position very much. I switched to goalie over the 2006 summer and made the backup goalie spot on my schools varsity team. Our starting goalie is a little better than me. (He's been playing goal since middle school) Yet he and I are almost equally skilled, he just has more game experience, - It was hard for the coaches to make a decision to whom they would give the starting spot too. I love the goalie position, it's great I love it. The only problem is I don't get to play very much. During practices I sometimes don't even get warmed up. - The starting goalie gets warmed up and then they get all the short sticks over and start the "Shot drill" At that time the starting goalie walks away and I get put in this drill with no warm up. I don't save as many as I would like too, and usually get frustrated at this drill - on top of that I have people yelling to give them a ball (we don't have 100's of balls)..
Bottom line- I kinda feel useless just standing around on the sidelines all game, I think I would be much more useful if I took up another position as well, such as Midfield or attack (these positions usually get tired, especially middy's.) I would still play goal whenever we have full field practices in a heartbeat any day and if something happened to the starting goalie I would gladly fill in for him, just when game time comes around I feel like I could be doing more for the team.
Do you guys think it's a good idea for a backup goalie to play two positions?
Don't get me wrong my main position would be goalie always, If I were to practice for a short stick spot it would probably be during free time, I might not even go through with it- If the coaches see that I'm doing better than the other goalie they could start me over him. so nothings for sure yet.
