i made my schools varsity team as a defender this year and i'm kinda nervous against going up against the really fast seniors we'll be playing. our first is against the runner-up for state the last two years and i am just looking for some pointers on what i can do to get an upper hand on them.

Well I know this is a girls form so I dont know if theres anything different then from guys besides hitting....But you made varsity so you doing something right. Just dont loose sight of the right things youve done. If that makes sense.

just keep hustling. i was a fresmman starter on varsity too, andi remember being so nervous! just listen to your coaches and teammates, and run through everything. you might not be the strongest or most experienced, but you can be the hardest working! ask your captains for advice, too

If your coaches didn't think you would be able to handle them, you wouldn't be playing. Remember that. Keep in mind, you should have also played full speed against your own team's top players as well, so you have to believe you can keep up with whomever you're guarding. You've been training for this moment, and you'll do fine. If you start to struggle, don't be afraid to ask for help. Hustle the whole game, keep your head up and remember what you've been told to do. You'll do fine, and the nervousness will go away after the opposing team's first trip down to the attack end to see you.

im also a freshman starting on varsity, i start center, which is amazing, i didn't elieve i could do it, but the coach really believed in me, and i ended up scoring 9 of the 10 points total. i love it. i played on jv in 6-8th grade and varsity is definately a big switch, but its worth it once you get out there. i love being the center of attention, especially the big crowds that allways show up. It is amazing. LAcrosse i my life, and varsity is my dream. And dreams really do come true :)

Congrats! I made varsity this year as a freshman. I was pretty nervous at first but now I'm settling in. Now to answer your question, to get the upper hand on the other players you should just work as hard as you can during practice and even spend some time out of practice to work on the things that need improvement.

I played varsity as a freshman, and from a mentality standpoint, the most important thing is to keep doing what it is that has made you sucessful, yet at teh same time realize that because of the high level of competition, there really is no margin for a letdown in effort.

Good luck to all, you'll probably be just fine.

yeah, especially if you realize that your on the team, so your good. never underestimate your self. and like stay focused. and play good, because you must be able to, lol.

im a freshman this year on varsity as well and it is intimidating, i know. i play attack and sometimes our huge senior defenders really scare me lol

but over all, just play your best. and our coach is HUGE on defense. he HATES not having good defense and from what i've learned from him yelling, is that its all about your attitude. youve GOT to have the mentality of "this girl is NOT getting past me. she is NOT catching the ball, and especially not in the 8 meter."

good luck with the season =]

this year i made varsity as a freshman defender to. i dont start and i dont play very much but i am taking this year as a really good learning experience and i am going to use it to my advantage for next year. if only i was in your position though, getting some playing time but if i were you i would just listen to my coach and just do what you have practiced. remember to use your feet and COMMUNICATION WITH OTHER DEFENDERS!!!!!

your on varsity for a reason. just hussle and dont quit; if you get beat, dont stop and pout (sp?), chase them down and give them hell.

confine in your coaches and captains, they will help you.

Your coach would not have put you on varsity if they didn't think you could handle the pressure. Don't think about the age difference just play.

i made varsity as a fresman too and i didn't play much and my sophomore year i got more playing time than most starters and this year as a junior i am starting and rarely come out of the game. so just keep learning and youll get more confident. for now just do what the coach put you on the team for and just play your strengths. hustling and talking are also extremely important

I was a freshman starter this year too, as a goalie though. My school is really small so it was easy for us to bond as a team, specially since there are like 4 frosh on the team.
i made V for my summer team too, which is tons of fun. I played on the HS team for All Star Express last year b/c the didnt have a goalie for the last tournie. It was bizarre b/c i barely knew any of them, and this year im starting to get to know them better. most of my friends are on the JV team but im starting to make new ones with the V.
CONGRATS to all frosh who made V this year!
