Alright after seeing a hundred different threads on ipods, and mp3 players in general lets:
1. Keep it here
and
2. I will make a kwik and handy guide to owning an ipod.
So: You want an ipod? You probably got alot of questions so....
1. Where can I get one?
A: Alot of places, but i reccomend getting one at Best Buy and/or Compusa, Because of their warranty plans. This is the one time that you want their warranty plans, because if anything happens to your 'Pod, they HAVE to give you a new one.
Effectively they give you a new ipod for approx. 60$. But its guarenteed. And new. Sometimes if your model has been discontinued they will upgrade you.
i.e.: 3rd gen 10 gig -> 3rd gen 15 gig.
2. What the hell is the "Gen" or generations you keep on talking about?
A: Good question Cumquat, Each different model has been assigned (by the public) a generation specification.
1st generation: Mechanical scroll wheel/Mechanical buttons around scroll wheel. Macintosh only. Transferred files through a firewire port on the top.
2nd Generation: Touchwheel/Mechanical buttons/ Mac windows/ Transffered files through firewire
3rd generation: Touch wheel with 4 touch sensitive buttons/Mac and Win/ Transfers files through firewire or USB through a dock connection.
iPod Mini: Comes in 5 colors/click wheel (buttons are on the actual wheel)/Firewire or USB through Dock connection.
4th Generation: Clickwheel (buttons are on the wheel)/Firewire or USb through Dock.
3. How many songs will i be able to fit on a mini/15/20/30/40
A: Well it all depends on:
The bitrate the files were encoded at
The actual length of the song
and what format your songs are...
BUT: If you have mp3s and they are around 3-5 mins and encoded at 128 kbps then this is what you should expect:
Mini/5gb ipods: 1,000*
10 gb: 2,000
15 gb: 3,000
20 gb: 4,000
30 gb: 6,000
40 gb: 10,000*
Those are just approximate values, and/or apple marketing values. The ones that are * are from apple.
4. I have Windows will it still work?
A: Yes you idiot.
BUT: if you have windows ME i suggest one of two things:
1. Get rid of Windows ME and go to Windows 2000 or:
2. Get Rid of Windows ME and go to Windows XP Pro
Why? Windows ME sucks. Yes it is quite possibly the worst Windows branded Operating system to date. Windows XP Home comes in a close second.
5. What kind of software do i need?
Well you will and most likely should use iTunes.
iTunes is apple's Jukebox/store, and is ultra simple to use.
Although some people will say that they can not find their Mp3 files ounce imported into iTunes. Its not true, its just that their ID3 tags are not in sync. You need to just edit the information for them.
6. What are some alternatives to the ipod?
A: Honestly there are only 2.
The iRiver-iHP 120 and the iHP 140. People have said the Rio Karma is good as well, but it doesnt seem to want to work.
7. Any good accessories now that i got my iPod?
A: Oh hell yea! only one thing though: You must know the size and the generation of your iPod before you buy it.
1. Lajo - www.xskn.com
Lajo is an excellent place to get anything case wise.
the exo3 is a good light/cheap case for preventing scratches and the exo2 is a good one for bigger dents, though its heavier. Want shipping free on your first time?
On the top banner click the "Lajo" tag logo hidden in the banner, and follow these pretty pictures.

then

I also suggest getting the iShade which protects the screen.
2. the Griffin iTrip
This thing lets you broadcast your ipod music to any radio station. It is sometimes powerful enough that people have reported that they can have "mini pirate radio stations" with their ipods
3. iCradle (http://www.pacrimtechnologies.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=82&osCsid=5d36e7bbdbebc1e10d1c657356ed7e1c)
This thing lets you dock your ipod and with a low cost firewire cable and a USB 2.0 cable which is included you can sync and charge at the same time.
8. Any good ipod sites?
www.ipodlounge.com is all you need.
*phew* and i am done.
