I decided to stand up and take the position as goalie
for our team this year, as I am used to playing attack.

Our first game is tomorrow, and in practices, I see
myself shying away from the ball as I'm in goal.

I'm looking for advice to not be scared of the ball..
Like drills to make me less afraid?

Obviously there won't be enough time before our first
game, and I've just started playing in goal as of two
weeks ago, but it may help over the lacrosse season.

Thanks.

You shouldn't be afraid of the ball to begin with if you want to play goalie, but things you can do are just repetitive shots on you and have somebody throw a ball at your face over and over again until you don't flinch.

Search the boards, I'm sure there are other drills that will get you used to being shot at.

try to watch the ball as much as possible and it makes it seem like it is going slower than it really is, plus i might get your mind off the ducking away habit

Yeah, tonight's practice went well.
I tried using more of my body to get in
front of shots, rather than using my stick.

I just need to get my adrenaline up, and
things should go alot smoother.

you just need to mentally balance yourself. adrenaline rushes are good but controlling your emotions and staying in a constant state of mind is better. hard to understand, maybe its just me. when i switched from attack it took me a week or so to get used to get hitting like that.

also, theres a rule and i think most people will say the same thing: stick then body. your stick should always move first then get your body behind it to backup. that makes it sound like a delayed thing, but eventually youll get it down to such a science that you will make that entire movement in that order in less than a second.

Our first game went poorly.

I kept the other team with only 6 goals on me for the
first 3 quarters, then in the 4th, the defense and myself
just fell apart.

The score ended up 12 to 2, but I had about 35 shots on me.
(around 23 saves.. not too bad for a first timer?)

Hopefully our next game goes smoother.

I would say that if you truly stopped 23 shots out of 35, you hardly had a poor outing. In fact, with 23 saves and a save percentage of 66%, you would qualify as phenomenal. Were all of those 35 shots shots on goal (SOG)? Because if not, then your numbers aren't quite right. Remember, a save is only a save if it would have entered the goal had you not saved it.

It will hurt more if you turn cuz you got all the padding in front and when i get hit im just like " YA IT FEELS GOOD"

Someone was keeping track, and he said that the new
rules say that it's a save if the goalie actually touches.

I'm unfamiliar with the goalie save rule, I'm just going by
what he said. The stats could totaly be off; but I do know
a lot were taken on me. eeee

im a goalie in hockey and i say if it hits the post it counts as a shot because u were in a good enough position so that the player couldnt see the net
