Doctors,
I am interested to hear what everybody wants when they purchase a stringing kit. How many inches of sidewall, crosslace, and shooter? Does it matter to you if nothing is tipped but just hot cut? Do you use the ball stops, or screw that come in the kit?
Cheers!

i think the lengths jimalax uses is perfect. I like tipped better because they're easier to use but both is fine. I don't use the ball stops but i use the screw. i always seem to be lacking in screws. BTw did you send the mesh?

i use everything in the kit and 30 inch sidewall and 35 top string are good lengths (which is what jima uses i think)

I prefer untipped strings (with the exception of hockey laces), but that's just me. Also I think the ballstop and a screw are useful additions.

thats what you get from jimalax's mesh kits.
but usually, you won't use that much string when you're stringing mesh.
i use about:
Sidewall: 2x 18"
Topstring: 1x 18"
Shooter: 3x 28" lace
Bottom: less than 10"
and for ball stops, i usually use one that comes with the head, but if i need one, i'll just make one with 10 layers of tape.

Jima's mesh kits are perfect, except for shooters. I think that you should have 36 in. shooters though, for rolled and U's and ect.
Ballstops and screws are great, but not completly necesary.

Sidewalls: Tipped laces are a nice touch. Not everyone has nice fat stringing holes like you get on Gait sticks. 18" is usually plenty, but 24" is appreciated so you can make your bottom string(s) out of the leftovers. One pet peeve about sidestring - it's often not thick enough. I prefer to use the thickest stuff I can fit through the holes so it lasts longer.
Same goes for top string.....tipped is nice and thicker is better. Nifty tip for preventing wear of top string - take a spare piece, melt it with a lighter, and dribble it onto the laces where they're exposed on the back of the scoop. Alternatively, some type of glue might give nice wear protection. I hate to re-do a pocket just because the topstring frayed.
Shooters: These don't need to be tipped. I personally prefer to buy loose skate laces (~48" or so) and cut to suit. Longer pieces let you do Us and Vs and channel weaves and whatever else you might want to do.
Ballstops: Who cares? Most of them don't do a thing and you're just as well to build one from tape. If you're going to pack one with a string kit, a nice thick piece of foam rubber with strong adhesive is appreciated, but really, I still have the ones that came with the sticks and haven't seen much need to replace them.
Screw: No real need with a string kit. I'm restringing, not necessarily mounting on a new shaft. I favour stainless No 8 Robertson machine screws. You can get these for pennies at any hardware store.

If you do venture into goalie supplies i suggest you double maybe triple the amount of side wall jimalax sends with their kits. Since most people like to string their 14 and 17d(hard/soft) with open sidewall, i find jim puts enough in to string closed sidewall but not an effective open sidewall. You may also want to add 2 thicker strings for runners, but that depends some like thiner runners others like thicker ones.

A mini ruler? Can you show me what one looks like?
I would definitely put a small stringing guide in there, if you get the chance. I didn't buy mesh from jima from a long time because I was scared I wouldn't be able to figure out how to string.

yea i know its a ruler from my school agenda book but still basically the same concept
and here are just some examples of the ballstops that i do like, unlike jimas which tend to fall off after a few games but they are .25 after all

a stringing guide would also be a good idea like riot mentioned you could probably simplify some of the instructions on one of the tutorials in the stick doctors lounge

What's the point of the ruler? I don't think I've ever used a ruler while stringing.

measuring how much of a shooter your gonna use or you bottom string, or if you do a mesh/trad hybrid etc.
or measuring how much your gonna leave on after youve tied a knot what else do you use a ruler for besides measuring stuff?
i mainly use it because i have spools
