i have been trying to answer this question for a few days now and cant seem to figure it out, so for all the knowlegable goalies out there give this a try.
When shot at a faster speed is it repetion and looking at the stick or is it acutally looking at the ball for a save.

Stick.
the faster the shot, the less of the ball you see. follow the head of the stick.

depends how fast your talking and from where. from about 15 yards out, i can see the hardest shooter on my team's shot (damn good shot, going D1), but any closer i try to look at the head. i definitely think you should see the ball, but im just not that good yet. working on it.

Jon Weston has some good advice on watching the ball. Check out the Players Corner:

"If you watch goalie play (and I do especially on game video), you will find that the most effective goalies are doing three things;
1) they are ready early
2) use there top hand as a sight to watch the ball
3) watch the ball in and from the shooters pocket all the way into your pocket as you drive hands, chest & hips to the ball for a save"

I watch the head of the stick and look the ball into my stick.
