l337 is like computer talk for LEET which means like awesome, cool, good.

4M is for AM, the 4 looks like an A

U83R is for UBER, the 8 and 3 looking like B and E and uber meaning big, huge.

dont worry took me a long time to figure it out as well, kinda like learning spanish or something..haha

I highly suggest Miles Davis - ******* Brew
Any Mediski, Martin and Wood.

Dizzy Gilespie, Billy Holidae(sp?), Louis Armstrong, and i definetely would check out the Louis Armstrong/Dizzy Gilespie collaboration.

RJD2 is kind of Jazz...

Beotches Brew is Radiohead's favorite. Anyway, it's just awesome. Miles Davis is the man, let's face it. He's amazing.

its spelled just like you'd think: holiday.

ella fitzgerald. django Reinhardt (if you like guitar, you have to hear him)

i like the more modern jazz (50s-60s); davis, coletrane, monk, brubeck, parker, but my favorite era is 30s-40s big band; goodman, miller, hampton, james, and that ilk.

i'm older that's one thing. my grandparents (WW2 generation) were raised on big band and passed that love onto me by playing it for me. after i got interested in jazz from the 40s i got interested in jazz from the 50 and 60s.

i dont care for much after that. pat metheney is ok, but not great.

i'm serious about Django Reinhardt, anybody who likes guitar music should go look for some MP3s of his music

well im bringin back a dead thread. but django reinhardt is sweet. and the 40s swing era is nice too, but i think the coolest is sonny rollins. get Sonny Rollins with The Modern Jazz Quartet (album) it's so cool. also gerry mulligan on baritone is nice too, and if you're feeling the swing revival you should check out indigo swing and bid bad voodoo daddy.

Everyone should go look up a band called The Bad Plus. They are a piano, bass, drum trio that does improv jazz over semi-classicaljazzhybrid piano. Their newest album Suspicious Activity is good.

I play Jazz, and I'm not a big fan of the New Age jazz coming out. John Coltrane and Miles Davis, while they're both very good musicians, are not my favorite jazz artists. I'm a bigger fan of the old school, big band, jazz...or even funk.

Enjoi's got it right. That's the best post I've seen all day. Add some John Scofield with the Medeski, Martin, and Wood (unless he's implicitly included in the bunch)

Scofield is amazing. Nobody can mess with the Maestro!

Duke Ellington and Herbie Han**** are also quite talented.

Zappa's "Jazz From Hell" won a 1986 Grammy.

Former NBA star Wayman Tisdale actually has some solid jazz in his repertoire, as well...

I'm going to add Quasimoto - The Unseen to the list, + Guru - Jazzmataz Vol. 1. Both are good mix of Jazz and Hip-hop

Miles is my idol since I play trumpet too. I would also go with Maynard Ferguson, The Brecker Brothers, Ellington is a genious, Thelonous Monk is also a good choice for those able to listen to more dissonent music. Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Marsalis, I could go on for a long time.

It's good stuff.

John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington Big Band Stuff, Johnny Hodges. Its all good stuff. I couldnt even pick a favorite.Oh yeah, Medski is amazing. I play sax in one of my schools jazz bands, so yeah, playing is almost better than listening.

Being a trombone player I have a great appreciation of the trombone in jazz. I cant think of any comtemporary people I like off the top of my head but the classics: Louie Armstrong, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. are all great.

spenny said this, but if you like guitar at all, i command you to listen to some Django Reinhardt.

you're mind will be blown.

he was a gypsy, and he was caught in a fire. the tendons in his fret-hand got messed up, and his pinky and ring fingers were permanently curled. even so, he can play the quickest and nimblest of all the great guitarists i have heard.

just buy a greatest hits or best of CD. i guarantee you will not be dissapointed.

Aside from Miles Davis and the usual suspects, I enjoy the music of Nina Simone, Herbie Hancock (Headhunters is a fantastic album), and the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

My dad has a ton of Jazz and Big Band (he has some great Count Bassie stories) on vinyl, so I'm glad they'll be passing into my grubby little paws for future appreciation.

I'm very partial to Coltrane (I had a teammate in college who'd put on Coltrane in the locker room after a win, made for a great atmosphere) and Miles Davis. I also like Dave Brubeck, though the one recording by him we don't have that we really want to get our hands on is Live At Finney Chapel.
