View Full Version : 27 year old goalie stick

Hi, folks; my first posting. After 4 years (1978-1982) of DIII varsity and one year of club lax playing goalie I put the game aside (my bad). Last year my eight year old, bored terribly with LL baseball, says, "Can I play Lacrosse this spring?" I guess he really liked watching Navy thrash UNC.

Even better, he wants to play goalie! My brother sends me my stick, a (now 27 year old) Brine goalie stick (no, there's no model name or number). Except for a bend in the shaft nine inches from the butt cap, rotten leather top string, and some tears in the soft mesh, it's in good shape. I do a quick fix on the top leather, with some side string and hacksaw off the botton nine inches (now the shaft of his regular stick and the goalie stick are the same length); he loves it! Or at least he likes it better than the (too large and heavy) stick the league gave us.

Now to my question: can the tears in the soft mesh be repaired, or should I replace the mesh? What replacement mesh would best suit this antique (not me! the stick!)? Yes, it's a plastic head.

Thanks!

Its better to get the mesh repaired because it will rip easy. Get some hard goalie mesh form jimalax and you should be fine.

Order some goalie hard 17, or 20d from www.jimalax.com

Mesh that old in the goal cant be asking for anything good.

id suggest restringing it with some 20 diamond mesh of jimalax. but first can we please see a picture of this beauty.

i would sugest a 12 diamond mesh, throws like a charm and cradle like on other.

i would go with a soft mesh or hard mesh for him. its not like there will be hard shots and rebounding everywhere, they dont need a deep pocket.
used mesh like that is especially bad because its been sitting still for almost 3 decades. that makes it stiff and dries it up, so itd be like trying to save it with a tennis racquet, and then the strings will break, which = bad.

I wouldn't use the stick as it will likely break due to the age. The plastic becomes brittle over time.

i'd hang that bad boy up on the wall, and get him something more recent. you dont want to break it, that thing is a historical artifact! lets see some pictures!

check out the STX shadow. its a slightly smaller eclipse, its intended for young players and as a training aide for advanced players. ive got one that i use when teaching goalies.

he may feel bad if he breaks it, i know as a kid my granddad gave me an old bamboo flyrod of his and i was always terrified that i'd break it, so i didnt fish as much as i should have. i finally got another rod and started fishing every chance i got.

ya, my grandpa did the same with a baseball bat back in the day when i played. it cracked and it was one of his favorite collectors items, and i felt terrible as well.

but yea, like spenny mentioned, go with teh shadow for a young kid. they are great training tools. i had one before it "broke" (dogs liked it more than me). they were good.
