I just finished up my first season of box lacrosse and found it a little bit more difficult than anticipated, my team did fine, theres just one thing that's kickin my butt.... Should I play my angles close to the pipes or take a step or two out to take away more of the goal from the shooters? Any other pointers about anything would be greatly appreciated too.
thanks.

take a step out, it cuts down the angle, giving the shooter less place to put the ball past you
make yourself look as big as possible
dont follow the shooter, follow his stick
dont go down on your knees like in hockey, gives the shooter a field day

stop balls...that's always a good place to start

just kidding...i've never played box, but i respect the guys who are out there taking twice as many shots on them as field goalies

I say take only one step out, but no more than two steps if you absolutely know that particular player loves to shoot from outside. However, the recovery for a back door shot is just as important.

Yup. Number one mistake of hockey-trained newbie laX goalies - come too far out to cut off the angle.

It works in hockey, but here if you're too far out, I just have to get a bit closer, and zing........over your shoulder and into the yawning cage behind you. If that's not there, I'll dish to my teammate that's coming up the floor on the other side.

You can still play angles in lacrosse, but don't come as far out, and watch for the cross-crease pass!

I never played hockey when I was younger, but I do agree with you in that point. Steve Dietrich had problems playing up to the top of the crease in his earlier years with Rochester and got lit up on cross-crease passes on a consistent basis.

What I meant was about 1.5 to 2 steps out if the net is 4' high by 4'6" wide or 4' high by 4'9" wide. In that case, you have to commit to the outside shot a bit more. If the 4' by 4' net is used, then no more than 1 step out from the goal line is as far as a goalie should come out.
