View Full Version : Ulysses by Joyce
My friend bet me that I couldn't read it, so of course, I took him on. I have to admit, I'm finding myself a little bit over my head. Has anybody else read it? We should start a book club or something.

Excellent book. I am a huge James Joyce fan. It really takes a lot of focus. I would read a few pages...kind of get confused..then read them over and over again until I understood it. It probably would have been better to start of with The Dubliners. I found it a much easier book to understand.

yea, not a very smart idea to jump into such a hard book, even A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man would have been a wiser choice, but good luck....

How old are you?

I'm a senior in high school. But (I am really trying not to sound cocky), I read a lot of books that my teachers tell me I should just wait for college to read.
Plus, my uncle in Ireland just about forces everyone in the family to began learning about James Joyce as soon as we leave the womb.

Yea I've read parts of Ulysses, but I've found that it simply isn't worth my time. I've read other Joyce works. I read Portrait for AP English and it was a fairly enjoyable book.

That's pretty cool though, do you have any other authors you would recommend? I've heard Faulkner is pretty good too, so I'm going to check him out next.

I would really recommend The Dubliners by James Joyce. Its a collection of short stories of the Irish middle class in Dublin. My favorite of the stories is "An Encounter." But I think they are all entertaining and much easier to understand than Ulysses. Ulysses can really get frustrating at times and can sometimes take away from just enjoying the story because you are focusing so hard just to understand whats going on.
Also, I have been getting into Evelyn Waugh the last few months. Decline and Fall was pretty good, but I really enjoyed The Loved One: An Anglo-American Tragedy. It was one of those books that are so hard to put down because you keep wanting to find out what is going to happen next.
