View Full Version : Tired of this stuff

I have noticed that many young players are obsessed with scoring. I understand the obsession but hope that tehy understand it is not the goal that matters as much as other stuff.
If you ask most college coaches they want the guy that passes to the guy that gets the assist. They want the guy that makes his team better not the guy that scores sometimes. No matter how many goals you average, a team can stop you from scoring, ie: hopkins did to powell twice, but the team cant stop him from getting assists. He had like 6 in the championship game.
I like scoring as much as anybody but I would hope that youth caoches do not promote goals as much as moving the ball, because anybody can rip a shot but not many can draw a double and hit the backside.
Using the powell example again, he has had countless times where he broke his man off and drew TWO slides but instead of throwing a risky pass to get an assist, he made the easy pass to the crocket or somebody else that got the assist. Both the guy who scored and the one who got the assist will thank powell because he made the defense move and got them both points.
This is just my little speal on something i noticed

I agree, although you get no recognition, winning a faceoff, picking off a pass, getting a ground ball, setting up the play, basicly, is very very rewarding inside.

I definantly prefer passing to shooting. I'll shoot if I have an open shot and sometimes I'll take it to the hole, but I prefer to get the ball moving and run an actual offense. Usually when I drive I end up passing it back out to whoever gets open. I prefer clearing well and playing great defense to trying to score all the time.

being the ball mover sucks.....i am the guy who sets up all the play i face off and i doubled everyone on my team in groundballs and the only person that even thought i was good for this was the varsity coach and he may move me up as a sophmore

I have a disability to score. ive scored like 2 times in 3 years of offense.

I definately go for the goal whenever I can...but i think it's kinda a defense thing. I'll pass it if I see someone open but when I come up field the second I see a reasonable chance to shoot I'll take it just cuz a LP goal is so nice and you don't get many chances. But I also am one of the best passers if I come down field and I draw a slide I make nice feeds to the crease and ended up getting a lot of assists. I def like to score and take every chance I get to score but if I see the pass or don't have the chance to score I won't try and make something happen I will pass it.

shooting wasnt a conscious decision when i played mid.
I dont know, but for me it wasnt about glory or anything, its like running out of the crease as a goalie, instinct.
If that makes sense

my team has its ball hogs and its REALLY annoying-- cause youll be open(and be yelling that you are open and your position)and they will be triple teamed and still will just go to goal and not pass--and usually miss because they have no pathway to shoot--GRR
I have scored 4 goals in 4 years. I think I had way more assists. I mean, I didn't really look for the shot enough. But, I was a pretty smart passer, so I stuck to that. Now I play d, and I'd rather shut people down.

I'm a former middie who now plays attack, and so I usually pass instead of shott

This is exactly my point!!! The varsity coach wanted you to play for him because you did the right thing whether it got you glory or not. That is what is important. Keep moving the ball

I agree with MX, the Varsity coach noticed you, therefore the better half of the college coaches (or smarter half) will notice you, just like your coach.

i only "scored" one goal last year (i didnt really score the d guy fliped it too the goalie and the goalie missed it. i was the closest to the ball so the goal counted for me) i had 5 or 6 assists and it felt great

It sucks this year my team had one main guy that did the faceoffs and won most of the time. So he would end up just driving to the goal and shooting. Meanwhile I was the one making passes trying to get something going, but once I passed someone else would just shoot wildly. Anyway the kid that did the faceoffs got moved up to jv because he always had the ball because he didnt pass. This really made me mad.

I know, I was just saying...you made it sound huge =P Dont worry, it was only your first year in HS, it doesnt matter. Just perservere (sp?) it and hopefully when your on varsity it wont be bad.

ya thats how it is for me, like in my 3 years iv only scored maybe 3 times as an attackmen, partly bc this past year when i started at attack we had a middie who never really moved the ball around, but i really encouraged movin the ball around i would say i was one of the assist leaders but yah like even ppl in my grade r like that they only go for the goal, like after they dodge they just try to run over the next person and get shut down and lose the ball instead of passing, but as they do everyone thinks there doin so awesome and everyone applauds him just bc ther being ball hogs and doin all the moves, but ya i just really get pissed when ppl are like i hav more goals than you haha, lacrosse is a team game and when you play with the team game concept movin the ball around its much easier and a better offensive situation

my coach says if youve got a shot, take it but dont take shots you know you cant make.
I play defense and thats basically what we do. we take the glory from the other team and give it to our attackmen but im kind of used to it. I play football as a lineman and they are hands down the most important position on the feild, (its true, ask any quarterback or runningback) but get the least recognition. thats called taking one for the team.

Mike Powell is the best example of a good player. Look at the Cuse Hopkins game this year. He was ALL the announcers talked about, but he ahd what, one goal and like 4 assists? He fed everytime he had the ball. Classy player.

our team has one ball hog who just rips from the top center but thats only cause none of our players hardly cut. From a goalies point of view its much harder to stop a quickstick shot that has come as the result of fast passing then a rip from the top corner.

i had something like 13 goals and 19 assists this year. I have made it my goal for next year to get at least 30 assists, and as long as I get at least one lone goal I'm happy. I hope college recruiters will see my ability to feed and the unselfish attitude that I have when I am on the field.

very true, thats why you have to move the ball fast and then redirect it and shoot

sometimes you gotta push toward the goal even if it looks impossible. case in point: ryan boyle in this year's quarterfinals. he was covered by passavia and he had to push and push until he got an inside roll. two goals using the exact same method. granted the game-winner came from his assist, but again, sometimes you gotta push toward the goal. not saying that the other princeton players suck, but boyle clearly had the leadership and ability to 'hog' the ball for the last two possessions in regulation.
