View Full Version : collapsable stick

i was thinking about something that would be cool for people that would not have a lot of room to keep their stick somewhere if they went on a trip or something, like on a plane and they just wanted to mess around with one. so i think it would be cool if we could figure out a good way to cut a shaft, like a F10 or something and beable to get a way to have them screw or attach them together along with the head.
i think this would be something cool for all of us to try to see if we can come up with a cool idea. i know this maybe a stretch but maybe we can get a company to make them, you know kinda like a guru or whatever but bigger and more collapsable.
anyway lets think of a good way.
ps if this gets moved to the stick tech forum thats cool, i just thought it would get seen here by a lot of people, then if they want to continue they can go there.

umm i dunno as it would have lots of weak points were it is cut

i dont mean to actually use it in a game, i mean like a trick stick or to throw around with if you go on vacation somewhere. this is not meant to be used in any games.

u CAN just carry it on the plane and sit with it, ive done that b4. but really all the companies would have to do is cut a stick in half and thread the inside of one of the pieces and stick something in the other side to attach it too, its a very simple concept.

laxfreak is right. but i was wathcign arthur the aardvark, and it showed a way to make a collapseable stick.
you cut the shaft in 2 or 3 pieces
and then on the places where u cut, but a bolt or nut. that way u can screw them together. if you dont get it, pm me or something

i hope the other old timers will chime in, but i seem to remember that on the late 70s one of the manufacturers made a spring loaded stick that could go from shorty to D-pole. i never used one or saw one, but i remember it as a subject of converation among the upperclassmen when i was a frosh on the team. i was also told that it was made illegal very quickly.
Petemoss do you remember such a thing?

Are you sure you can still do this after 9/11? The airline I flew on (I forget which one, but it was one of the big ones) the past 2 years coming back from school make me check my lacrosse stick every time. They have rules printed out that says no hockey sticks, baseball bats, etc. and that includes lacrosse sticks.

ya we cant take our sticks on board anymore. i actually read it in lacrosse magazine, but ya most airlines wont let you have it with you.

cut it down alot, then it'll fit in your suitcase
or take the head off and pack the head and shaft separatly
Assuming this is ministick size
remember these things? you could try to use the same concept..

a collapsable shat won't work because then it would narrower at the top-- simple logic.
I say you get a company to cut a shaft into 3 pieces, and the put threading on them so they screw together. great idea UILAX

they make these, i saw them at sports authority, its a nasty looking thing made of plastic that is very wide at the first piece, narrower at second and throat sized on the final piece, it all collapses together

i fit my stick in my suitcase when going to FL(head and shaft separated)...when I told my friends I brought my stick they were like "where is it, you didnt bring it" sure enough, when I unpacked, there it was!! They were surprised...
For the collapsable shaft, my brother and I made one just about 2 years ago. We cut it into 2 sections and used bungees inside, the first 4 inches of the bottom half had to be more narrow than the bottom of the top half, so I think we used sand paper and a blow torch...and it fit snuggly into the top half. Then you could pull it apart(you kinda had to twist and pull cause it fit pretty well into itself) it was cool.

yea i was thinking the threading idea, heres what i was thinking, you cut it in two, then you have one side have the male threading (like the screw part of it), and the onther have the female part. then you have them on like a plastic or wood piece that you could shape into the shape of the shaft. then you put PVC cement around it and stick it down the shaft, that stuff works really reallly well and i think would hold. then you would be able to just unscrew and screw it back on. and then you could just attach your head with a screw. if we wanted we could think of a way to attach the head without needing a screwdriver. i think all this would be better than having anything taper or slide down or into another piece.
also i want this to be a legal size, again not to use in a game but to play wall ball and all that.
keep the ideas coming, i may get a hold of a F10 or 6000 and try this.

take a womens shaft and put it inside of a mens shaft. if you can rig a mechanism like they have on old people's canes you find in CVS you would have a retractable stick rather easily. Too bad you can't use it in a game because its illegal and would probably break.

Sounds like a cool idea for a trick stick but for anyone that would think about using this in a game it would be illegal. :) Good luck on this project.

yea i think im gonna start on this project. make it just like the pool cues that twist together.
BTlaxripper

somehow force a bolt into one end, and a nut into the other and they'll screw together like a pool cue... i think that would be ur best bet

if you bring it just unscrew the head and take it off put it in the suitcase and throw the shaft in there easy as pie i brought my helmet gloves and stick to hawaii like that

hey BTlax ripper, i had the same idea but i was thinking if you are cradling do you think it would come apart way to much? or does it lock in a way that it will be ok to cradle a bit.

Yeah, good idea. I thought of this a while back because I had to take my stick apart to get it to fit into my locker. Maybe CONCEALED WEAPON for a name.

hmm....i dunno if this has been said but you have a small metal piece (very high strength with springs that are pushing two metal sides out with a bump that goes through a predrilled hole on the shaft, so you cut the shaft in two, drill two holes and when you cant to connect it slip that in thereand align the bumps with the holes in the shafts....make sense to anyone?

Long poles can be a pain sometimes.

08-05-2004, 02:51 AM
GCHSLAX, you mean the thing on crutches to get the correct height? where it clicks into place when you have it in the holes? i thought about that too, but then i thought of hte problem with the bumps sticking out when you are cradling and they get caught on them. it may still work. i think im gonna need a lot of cheap shafts to test all these out. concealed weapon is a good name as well.

not at all, the threding would tighten and if you know how to cradle, the entire shaft should be moving? Nobody cradles so fast and so spastically that they'll unscrew it... i stand by my hypothesis and say that is still your best bet.... no bunbs sticking out of it and suck.

i think we should call it the Lou-Dog
GCHSLax04
08-05-2004, 12:25 PM
the bumps wouldnt be a problem really, tape over them pre use and if your not playing in a game then i doubt they will get in the way... There should be another way to do it though, and yes i was talking about the crutch system
UILAX16
08-05-2004, 12:55 PM
yea but if you tape over it then you are going to have to take the tape off everytime, and im not looking to play in a game with it, it wouldnt hold up very well and its illegal. all i want this for is a travel shaft to allow easy packing away. i still think the pool cue idea is the best. im still a little concerned about it coming undone. i bought an alloy 6000 and i might start trying to put it together.
the lou-dog is not that good of a name sorry. i still like the BREAKDOWN (more of a brine name) or the CONCEALED WEAPON (more of a warrior name).

okay what if u cut a shaft into 2 peices and then inserted threading into one and use a torch and kinda solder it togther and then put threading on the inside of the other peice...that way they would go together but both pieces would be the same width....the problem is...if the shaft is hexagonagal or any other shape besides circular....it could take many tries to get both peices to line up together

ive seen collapsible shafts before. theyre telescopic and use those crutch adjusting buttons and a miniture head. it is three peices and it gets pretty small. it works fine just to play around with. i dont know where to get them though

thats what i was thinking as i read this thread ... however, i thought of a way to fix that
if you welding to nuts (one into each half of the stick -- or three parts, it all depends on how small you want it to break down), and then got a bolt, but not a normal one, you would need the kind that is just the threads, they sell these or you could cut the head off a normal bolt
anyway, now you could screw it in about halfway into one nut, and then screw in the other half of the stick onto the screw
now say you messed up, just undo it a little and then try it again ... this is hard, but eventuall you will get it to line up correctly ... once this happens ... take off one pare of the stick taking great care to not move the screw ... now with the half that is exposed, cover it with lock tight .. and screw it back on ... it should still line up, and now let it dry. that half of the stick will become permenant with the screw sticking out of it, and you screw the other half into it.
to prevent the screw from moving during the first step once youve lined it up and you are about to align it, you could easily just put a little lock tight on the first part you screw in ... and then just break that seal (only use a little so you can break through it)
i think that would work best, and you could make the stick into as many pieces as you wanted to

oh so basically you just make it so that if u line up the sticks and then screw it together it lines up perfectly

Your idea is interesting but seriously is it a big problem not having enough room for a lax stick, they fit almost anywhere...
Althought I do see your point with D-poles, but as mentioned above with an attack stick you can just take off the head and put them both in a suitcase.

it depends how big ur suitcase is
or wat if u want it to fit in a backpack

Or you could just do what I did and if your flying put your stick in a bag that they give you at the airport and have it sent in the plane like that. That might be a little easier. Just a thought tho.
