first off, welcome to the forums! I hope you like it here! Second, this belongs in the Lacrosse Instruction Section.

Now, what you can do with checks is:
Slap check - swing your stick at their stick
Poke check - thrust your stick at their bottom hand
Body check - put your hands together on your stick, run into the person, and thrust outward with both hands
...and much more ;D

welcome to the forums and the sport of lacrosse
if you go to the instructions page or just search for "defense" or "checks" you will find alot of info (there is also a sticky on that page)

XxlacrossexX covered some things you can do but here are some things you can't

slash: this is really up to opinion..but usually its when a ref believes its a uncotrolled slap check but refs are sometimes realy picky on this or they jsut let the teams play on which i think is better

illegal cross check: usually when you check someone too high or your hands are too far apart (a glove width apart its the most it can go)

i think there are more but there are some just real major penalty calls for you

You also can only hit them in an attempt to hit there stick. So you can not just run up and wack them in the back or on the opposite arm if they have the stick only in one hand. Basically, if you are attempting to hit there stick, you should be good. Also, do not hit them in the helmet. It is a penalty.

okay, thank you all.
what i already knew was that in order for checking them to be legal, they either must have the ball, or be within 5 meters of the ball, and that checking from behind is illegal.

you can whack them from the elbows down and pummel them with your hands close together on your stick.

If you really want to get in-depth with the rules, I suggest reading LaxRef's FAQ (http://www.lacrosseforums.com/showthread.php?t=74727) which should cover a lot of what you can and can't do. Also, don't be afraid to PM members or moderators for further clarifications on the rules, equipment or questions about the sport in General. Also, the search bar at the top of the page is going to become your friend. Chances are the question you want to ask may already have been posted in answered and running a search on the forum should yield you plenty of results.
