Ok, so I was watching the Wings game at the Wachovia Center play the Swarm. Team A (Wings) has the ball on offence. Team A loses the ball and Team B (Swarm) player goes running down the field on a fast break, (there is an open net) and a Team A player throws his stick at the ankles of Team B player. Team B player falls and has to be carried off the field. Team A player gets a 2:00 minute penalty.
-I'm not a ref, but shouldn't the penalty be more sever?

Was there intent to injure? If so, toss him. If he was, perhaps, trying to throw his stick so it would somehow hit the guy in the arm or stick or something and possibly prevent him from scoring, then give him a 3:00 NR. Just my opinion.

I can't speak specifically to NLL rules, but in any other box game that would be a 5 minute penalty, and a penalty shot if there wasn't anyone between the ballcarrier and the net.

Yea it was an open net because they pulled their goalie. And Califeeder, No, I don't think there was intent to injure.

I just double checked the NLL rules and the penalty for throwing the stick is 2 min or a penalty shot (the rules aren't very which penalty applies to which situation). But if the goalie has been pulled then it could also be an awarded goal.
Check out the rule 99) Throwing the stick here: http://www.nll.com/uploads/2007rulebook.pdf

the key thing to remember here, is that the NLL writes their own rules. and often they don't seem to make too much sense!

It looked to me that the guy tripped over his own stick and speared himself. Then they wouldn't replay it on the bigscreen. I don't know. Any clip of it. BTW my seats were lame.

thats cool that you were there too. It might have been what you said, maybe he did trip over his own stick, yet he had his stick up all the time and he went off holding his ankle (he had to be helped)
