Ya upstate is definatly worth going to. Travis Tarr goes and alot of other great coaches. One of the returning coaches just went as the number 2 overall middie in the MLL draft.
Also last year the coach from UMD showed up for a day to check it out.
But like he said it fills fast so check it out now if you want to get in.

This is what i got on the All-Star Game on saturday
Hello,
If you are receiving this email you (or your son) have been invited to play in the So/Jr. All-Star Game this Saturday at Laxtravaganza. Congrats on your nomination and selection, it is a great reward for your hard work throughout the year.
The game will be at 3:30 at Holy Angels. We are still working out the details of game format but please bring either a reversible jersey OR light and dark jerseys for the game. You are NOT allowed to wear regulation High School jerseys (eg. the jersey you wore during the season).
Please be at Holy Angels at least 1/2 hour before the game so we can get a little warm up before the game and not take up game time.
Contact me ASAP if you are unable to make the game. We have quite a few players and we will make every effort to get players equal playing time.
Thanks again for all your hard work. Coach Visich and I hope to see you on Saturday. I will continue to send out emails as necessary with information.

But you have to be pretty aclimatized when you get to Vail though, right? Like you should be able breathe easier... I would think.

Actually, I believe Vail is actually higher in altitude since it is in the mountains...thus making it harder to breathe in Vail then in Denver...

I'm not sure about any of that. All I remember was that it was about 95 degrees in Denver everyday, and about 90 in Vail. I was dead.

Camps and Club Team Season.
Anyone want to share their opinions of camps/club teams in the Minnesota area?
1. Do you think they help you become a better player or are better players developed at home practicing in the back yard/school yard/wall and in the weight room?
2. Does the club team coaching meet your expectations? If not, what could be done to change it - be specific.
3. What camps have a bad reputation and why?
4. What club teams have a bad reputation and why?

I don't know everyone on the roster, but I do know there are 28 kids on the team, and they just got back from the Denver team camp (don't know how they did), and they're going to Hobart and Hotbeds as well later in the summer.
Also, who all is playing in the Junior Gold league tomorrow night?

Minnetonka only had a couple seniors, and a lot of their starters were sophomores.
Does anyone know how many were invited to try out for elite?
Sophomore Attackmen Sean Folley and Matt Wyer both got invited and made it. I’m not sure about sophomore middie Charles Earl-Hansen though. I’ll get back to you on that one.

I guess we could talk about the different summer leagues?
I know there are like 2 or 3 going on right now.
The one I'm in (Breck) is the Junior Gold League at Blake middle school. The semis and championship are next monday.
I know there's a league for the more northern teams (whitebear lake, mahtomedi, centennial, etc.) or something like that.
I would guess there was one for more southern teams, like eastview, apple valley, and eagan, but I don't know for sure.
Anybody got information on the other leagues?

Nick Weil is NOT a savior. He was the Cooper Head Coach years ago - he had a few years of succes, but that was on the back of some unique players. He teaches a 3-3 zone that most good stickhandling offenses can destroy. OFfensively, he is decades behind the times.
He comes from Long Island.
Ask him if he ever was suspended from coaching while at cooper (and why if the answer is yes...) and ask the specifics on why he seperated from the program.

Unfortunately, I do not feel comfortable propigating rumors about those things on a public site, as I do not have first hand knowledge about them. But the two questions I pose are relevent, and reasonable to ask any new hire. IN this case, I would suggest that the answers be checked with people from the Cooper Lacrosse Program, and any other program he had subsequent involvement.

Turner, I like your picks for the rising seniors, even though it is pretty much just the Elite roster from the past year. I think Tom Villandra will be the best LSM if Peter Johnson plays close. Best attack is definitely Dooley, best middie is probably Seivold, and best goalie is definitely MJ (Michael Jordan).
Which teams had the most seniors graduate from last year (so they will struggle this year) or who had the least (and will do good this year)?
AHA lax5
08-29-2007, 09:42 PM
Yea I agree Tommy V is a sick LSM. I was just thinking that Blake could POSSIBLY have the best players at every position except goalie next year. Dooley, Seivold, and Johnson obviously.
And for losing the most seniors, I know Prior Lake lost 23 or so seniors last year...so ahh...they might be a whole different team next year. Emphasis on whole.

I like your opinion much better than that of the MV Goalie....and though they did lose a lot of starters....they didnt lose that many at the midfield - only 3 - so basically one of the 3 lines....they return one starting defenseman, and a good goalie as well - lil giligan...they will have to rebuild the attack - plus with a couple of transfers, anything could happen.....

alrighty heres some stuff for ya. i used to play for nick weil while at cooper. he was a crazy coach that was behind his time, yet he still knew how to play the game. he played a diamond defense zone that a recruited old players as assistants to modify his style. while he was coach it was not a high school sport, so he was never paid that much. his first few years he actually coached for free. and yeah he did get suspended ha like i said he was crazy

To what AHAlax asked awhile ago about next rising stars i have a few.
Turner and Mack for holy angels, they both are extremely talented. I heard Turner is getting looked at by CW
Davitt from MV. He is probably the best goalie in the state right now. Hofstad from lakeville is the only other goalie i have herad about that has real talent.
Jacobson from MV is also extremely good.
Pretty much the entire starting line from Centenial should be watched.
Katkov and AJ from Edina
Kip Dooley- do i even have to say anthing.

Don't forget about Swanson from ep and MJ from anoka. but I don't think anoka is going to be varsity this year so he will pretty much get shutouts in at least 50% of his games. I also heard Sergio from wayzata is a solid keeper.

goalie situation from both being from yeti- hofstad very solid goalie, showed alot of potential in chicago but got hurt so he didnt go to notre dame. serg is moving to pensylvania so wayzata loses him but he got hot at the end of the summer and hes sold.
also, does anyone know what the conferences are or sections are going to be.
all i've heard from us (centennial) is that we have mahtomedi and mounds view and thats about it

Yea each team will play eachother twice..like a home in home series( one game at your home field and one game at their home field ).
Another thing Hoban said is that eventually there will be a trohpy handed out to the team that wins that all-private confrence. Kinda sweet eh

That's just a conference, not a section. I think that the winner of that conference will be a contender for the title, but there are just as many good public school teams as private these days. The days of private school domination in MN lacrosse are coming to an end as the public schools start bringing up hundreds of kids from their youth programs. In the future, teams like EP, Edina, and Wayzata will be power houses because their giant talent pool will just overpower any private school's shallow talent pool.
Regardless, I'm was still curious about if what I read on here is true: that Seivold won't be Blake's head coach anymore, but instead the head coach from Benilde from last year?

1> Rob Horn is the Blake Head Coach. He was (on paper) an assistant, and paid as one, irrespective of his role on the field (which I know was shared-head with Coach Mulcahy). This change does not surprise me - when one is pursued for a promotion at a quality program, it is not a bad thing to accept the promotion and leave. Good programs lose assistants to Head positions all the time (see Patriots loss of Mangini/Crennell and multiple other situations)
2. Pub v. Priv. Interesting to see all the Privates toghether - I wonder if it is a first step to the MSHSL segregating ALL private schools from public in all sports -- something done in many other states.
3. Your thought that the public schools will overpower the privates is interesing, but I'm not sure it is necessarily true. So long as the wealthy communities continue to develop lacrosse, a number of very good players will leave those communnities go to private high schools for reasons other than (or perhaps because of a school's success at) sports. As examples - look at the home communities for many of the current private school players - you'll see many from Wayzata, EP and Edina - and then ask why that would change in the future?

I agree with this stance, as with more traditional hotbeds (NY, MD, PA)...its the private schools that tend to dominate, no matter what the numbers might say. Also, one thing to keep in mind - it doesnt matter how many numbers, or how large your prospective talent pool might be if the coaches involved cant put it together....
Look at the staffs for the majority of the private schools just in that newly formed confrence, most have them have been in place for at least 3 years - and they are usually some of the premier teams in the state. If those traditions continue, they will continue to attact the type of players that want to play in successful programs with solid staff. I know EP is a great example of a dominant program with a dominant feeder program, however, they have had 3 different HC and systems within the past 4 years...yes they have been successful, and will continue to be, but with change always looming - that might have an effect on a parent deciding to send their child to Breck or TG for example. Whether or not we admit it, a lot parents want their children to have a chance to be successful in the classroom and in the atheletic arena if at all possible (we tend to see this a lot more with hockey in MN than with lacrosse right now).
It will be intresting to see how the state will change further on down the road, espically with new teams going to varsity status, it might only be a matter of time before we have a Class A, and AA State tourney...(but probaly at least 3 years away).

I talked to Kip who is at Blake obviously. He said the reason why Rob Horn was hired to be the "head" coach at Blake is only because Seivold is too busy. Kip said that with Seivold running the whole youth/middle school program he can rarely make it to practice for them. So Horn is basically coming in to cover practice and I almost want to say be a chaperone. But on game days, Seivold with be the main man and will be the head coach. Also, he said that after this year, Seivold will have no more kids going through the program and could possibly hang up the high school gig and just stick to the youth program and Elite? Who knows...
As for the public schools being better then private, its possible. Youth programs are going to decide mostly who will be the power house for the next 10 years I'd say. For example, we, AHA, don't have a youth program. So we are basically starting from stratch every year and going around school trying to get more kids interested in coming out for the team. It helps when kids come into the high school program having experience and even some chemistry with kids. The more kids with experience, the better chance you have at winning...

Wow...after reading this, I went straight to the source to find out what was the deal....I talked with Seivold. He was planning on stepping down at somepoint, and it just so happened that he found a replacement he trusted. Rob will not be a "chaperone", as he is hiring his own staff to field all the programs at Blake -middle school, jv, etc. (not to mention putting in his own systems)...I would be careful in twisting or misintrepreting Kips words in a public forum. Rob will be the head coach on the sidelines, and on gamedays - with Joe assisting him when he can make it- you my friend where sadly misinformed - or you made an dumb assumption based on a very short conversation...either way - you dont hire someone to be a Head Coach, and make it public knowledge (press releases, letters to the parents, etc) if he isnt going to be, but you will figure that out in time. Also, why would he leave a program that he built, won a state championship at, and then take a step down to be a "chaperone"? (that wouldnt be very smart) Rob is a phenomeonal coach, ask the BSM guys.....and probaly the second most qualified coach in the state behind the one he is replacing.
can we move on now and talk about lacrosse??
Hey I'm not saying any of that was 100% truthful. Thats just what Kip told me, and Kip goes to Blake and is very close to Seivold, so I was stating it because he is a pretty reliable source. I didn't "twist or misinterpret" anything that Kip said. We had a lengthy conversation, and I certainly wasn't making any dumb assumptions. Also, just because Horn lead BSM to a state title, does that make him such an amazing coach? I mean ya I'm sure he helped, but look at the line up he was coaching with. The best defense and best attack lines up in the state, anything less then a state championship would have been a let down. I'm not saying he is an awful coach or anything, I'm sure he has potential cause he is young...but with that line up, state championship was destiny.

AHA#5.
1. You note that BSM had "the best defense and best attack lines in the state". But you fail to note that the BSM kids didn't just emigrate from Boys Latin or Sachem - they worked hard and WERE TAUGHT how to play the game over a period of time. Hmmmm I wonder who did the teaching.... Could it be the BSM coaching staff, including Rob Horn.?
2. In the BSM v. EP game, BSM made a critical defensive adjustment - and EP's scoring dropped off dramatically. An adjustment, I'm told, which was made by Coach Horn.
3. Try coaching a team that is "expected" to win a state championship. It's not as easy as throwing the balls out there and winning - a coach has to manage egos, expectations, parents, administrators while battling to keep the team focused and not reading press clippings. BSM's coaching staff - including Coach Horn - did that.
4. Coach Horn assists at UMD, the most successful program in the state. And has played at Wheeling Jesuit and UMD. He has background at multiple levels.
So let's review.
A: The HS team he coached improved over the time he was there to the point where they were the "Best" (using your term).
B: He makes decisive and determinitive in-game adjustments in the biggest game of the year that played a large role in winning the championship.
C: He has experience in coaching teams that have talent and expect to win a championship -at both the college and HS level. Something that is very valuable to a team like Blake - a team with Kip and Jordan.
Name another HS Head Coach that would be willing to move to a new program with that background or any assistant coach in MN with that background - I cannot.
I see every reason why Blake would want to seek out Coach Horn and cement him as a Head Coach now - and I see no reason why Coach Horn would take the position if he was merely a "caretaker"
As someone very interested to see what happens with the BSM program, all I can say is that it was a great hire by a smart athletic department. I also think that IF BSM slips next year because of the absence of the great senior class that left, Coach Mulcahy will get the blame - and I think that would be seriously unfair.
I think the games between AHA and Blake, and Blake and BSM will be great! I expect AHA and Blake to be contenders, along with some others I'll list later.
Let's all move on to the 2008 thread, shall we?
