View Full Version : Looseball near endline situation....

This didn't actually happen, it was just a thought:
Situation 1: Lets say attackman A rips an underhand shot that skims the ground and misses the goal. As the ball is racing towards the endline, two players (one from team A, one from team B) begin racing towards the endline. While the ball is still inbounds and has not crossed the endline, the player from team A intentionally hits the player from team B in order to slow him down and prevent him from backing up the shot. Would this be flagged (maybe for hitting the player without intent to gain an advantage during a ground-ball situation), or no?
Situation 2: All of the same occurs, but the hit takes place AFTER the ball has crossed the endline. Grouds for a flag? And if so, why?
Both situations: They are within 5 yards of the ball, and there has been NO whistle blown yet.
Thanks.

are they within 5 yards of the ball? is the hit itself legal? did you blow your whistle as the ball crossed the endline?

Within 5 yards, and the smack was legal, all good.
Beyond 5 yards, what do you call?
Loose ball push....(whatever)? Is a shot actually a loose ball in this case, or something entirely different?
USC perhaps?
At the level you play, Cali, the time elapsed between a missed cage and an endline call is measured in eyeblinks. There is no time for jostling. Perhaps a hard skinny angle shot that decellerates fast as it heads for the cone is what you have in mind.....Then, If a player stops dead in front of an opponent or something, I'll award the ball to the guy who is closer to the ball and ignore the tactics (as long as it happens within 5 yards of the ball) Otherwise, it is illegal contact beyond five yards and the technical foul determines possession.

Inerference. And this is all much more likely on a high, deflected shot than a fast one.
Situation 1: Loose ball Interference and I'd award ball to Team B, w/ no time-serving penalty on A.
Situation 2: If it's relatively light body contact, I'd probably stick w/ Interference. Anything more than that and I'd flag for UR or Illegal Body Check.
At the level you play, Cali, the time elapsed between a missed cage and an endline call is measured in eyeblinks. There is no time for jostling.A ball moving at 75mph (a moderately fast shot) will cover 10 yds by a stationary player (think 5 yd radius rule) in .273 sec. Obviously, a faster shot will significantly reduce that 'window of opportunity' to body check an opponent, as does how closely the ball passes in relation to where the two players are.
Like 3PP wrote, we're dealing w/ eyelinks here. I find it hard to believe that in a time frame of 1/5 - 1/3 of a sec on an errant shot, Player A can time a legal body check on B w/ the legitimate intention of doing so to maintain possession. Realistically in that amount of time, the most two players racing towards the endline could do is nudge one guy behind him a bit to beat him to the boundary ball.
In either situation above, if I think A is simply looking for an excuse to hit B, then I'm flagging A for UR or Illegal Body Check.
