I was wondering if official definition of a ground ball such as when its awarded to a player. would that require change of possession and so on?

A ground ball is a ball that is not in the possession of any player yet still on the field of play.
Possession is secured by whichever team picks up the ball.
It's really one of the simpler concepts in the game.
It depends on whose definitions you use. A ground ball ball by NCAA definition has to be contested by an opponent within 5 yds, has to create a change in possession, and the player who gains possession of a loose ball must have complete control of it (i.e., not just momentarily have the ball in his stick). A GB by NCAA definition doesn't even have to touch the ground. What other ppl consider interceptions &/or caused turnovers are statistically GBs in NCAA mlax.
The NCAA Rulebook devotes 1 1/3 pgs to GBs including 8 AR's. Check out this related thread, if you really want to learn the nitty gritty.
