Ok. I was playing today, and a ref came up to me and said you mouthguard is illegal, but Im going to let you play (JV). I have no idea why it is illegal. Is it illegal now to have a clear mouthguard or was that ref horrible like many of the refs in my league?

It bothers me that so many people assume official incompetence whenever they don't like or understand a call or ruling.

Anyway, the mouthguard must be a highly visible color other than white or clear.

sorry im going to have to disagree with the first part, but thanks for clearing that color issue up.

Trust me, I had a game out of state today, and boy do I wish I played out of state. The refs in our league are all football refs trying to make money, except for 5 (yes, we have counted). Sometimes we do assume official incompetence, but some of them are horrible.

and yah the refs in our league arent the best either . my coach knows the rules way better than most of our refs

that mouthguard would be questionable

my refs arent too bad, but when they make a wrong call or miss a call and the speaking captain (me) nicely brings up the issue, they get mad and call you on stuff directly by the rules when they havent been all game

1. If the ref can see the color then you should be fine. The idea is that the official should be able to easily see that you have a mouthpiece in your mouth and not stuck on your helmet.

2. To all of those that complain about officials - when you have time from your playing the game then it is time to give back to the game. One of the best ways to give back to the game is to officiate. Remember all of your complaints and become a better official for it.

I'm getting the distinct impression there must be no good officials anywhere. Everyone seems to be saying that the officials where they live aren't good and that the officials elsewhere must be better. Perhaps everyone has unrealistic expectations regarding what they think is the perfect official.

my mouthguard is clear with a black front so you can notice that i have it in, but for the most part i just have a small portion of it in and the rest out...i dunno i never really liked them. for me because of allergies etc i usually breathe out my mouth then my nose so i just let it hang out and i have never been called for it either..so i dunno...would that be a penalty?

I know in our league they have to be a color other than clear or white, but we play a team that sclose by and out of state and they can wear clear ones, I think it varies by area. As far as addressing questionable calls, I have the same problem. If I bring up a call for clarification at half time or between quarters our refs basically blow me off, or basically tell me the situation, but not explain what makes it illegal.
