View Full Version : Inadvertant Horn

During our game today, as the other team was pushing 4 on 4 in transition, the horn accidentally sounded from the sideline (we were the home team and it was our manager who blew the horn). Our middie playing the ball stopped while the other team didn't. Needless to say, we went from an even situation to a fast break and they ended up scoring in the next couple of seconds to break a tie and begin to pull away from us.

My questions are:

Is there a specific rule that addresses this?

Does it matter if the home team or away team is disadvantaged?

How would you like to see this called?

In my leauge if this happens they just give a warning and assume the guy didn't know.
no there is no specific rule i know of.
no it dosent matter.
i like to see this called as a timeout

So helpful...

Can any of the regulars shed light on this?

LR, LF25, 3PP, CP etc....

"Play the whistle" is shorthand for "In case of an inadvertent flag or horn, officials will stop play at the earliest opportunity that does not interfere with an imminent scoring opportunity." [NCAA 7-13]
In the example you sight - it appears to me that the inadvertent horn caused the fast break advantage and in my judgment/opinion the whistle should have been blown to prevent the fast break advantage since prior to the horn there was no imminent scoring opportunity in the even situation you describe - others may disagree based on their judgment of the situation described.

if the inandverntant horn resulted in your team turning the ball over because your middie stopped and was checked, then the ref should have blown the whislte

The other team had the ball, but our middie stopped playing defense on him when the horn blew, giving them a 4 v 3.

Under both NCAA and NFHS rules, players should play from whistle to whistle and ignore horns and beepers.

Under NCAA rules, as cited by pboyd, the official should not sound the whistle after an inadvertant horn until the scoring play is completed, so, if your middies stopped playing defense, that is considered a brain cramp.

Under NFHS rules, inadvertant horns are not discussed. Most officials will either wait until the scoring play is completed or will sound the whistle if everyone on the field stops playing and stares at the official.

then its a goal, if the team is pressing on a fast break like that, im not going to kill the advantage and get chewed out by the refs
