View Full Version : Can the officials do this?

A couple of days ago we had the most bizarre high school game that i have ever been a part of. First the refs seemed to favor one team, but then they completely switched and started making (what i thought were) horrible calls. The game is over and my team lost, and i've kind of gotten past it, but there was one call in particular that I have a question about.

It is the middle of the third quarter, and each team has scored a couple of goals. One player on my team had been warned earlier in the game about his celebrations after scoring. He scores again, does a little celebration. After the ref sees the refery calls a stick check on him. The two things I thought were fishy about it were:
1. I wasn't aware that refs could pick him out like that for a stick check. I know you are supposed to check the first goal of each quarter, but i didn't know they could pick him out like that
2. The player had already had his stick called for a check by the other team, where it was found to be leagal, but they still checked it again.
3. The ref called a 3 minute non-relesable on him for his stick, and when the refery was asked what was illigal about the stick and if he could demonstarte what was illigal, he said no, that it was just illigal.

I apologize if I sound like I am ranting, because I am trying not to, I was just wondering about what the rules say.
Any insight on this situation would be very helpful. Thanks alot!

sounds like i would be pissed as well. Conduct tells refs to demonstrate the infraction, and at least say what it is. Im not sure about if they're allowed to do the first thing.

1. be aware that the equipment check is usually done after the first and third quarters but not necessarily so.....

2. simply because a crosse has been found legal previously doesn't mean it will remain so and the officials can check it again....

3. officials are under no obligation to demonstrate why the crosse was illegal....

Can't the refs check a stick anytime? Especially after a goal.

B-Gun, Refs are encouraged to call 'random' stick checks, particularly on frequent scorers, so the stick check was not out of line. Good practice, as a matter of fact.

That the stick had passed an earlier check does not ensure that it is still legal. Let's assume that all sticks are legal prior to face off......why are some illegal by the first quarter break?

The answer is that sticks that are barely legal and loosely strung up tend to sag with vigorous use and become illegal.

Perhaps the ref noted that your teammate's stick was B.A.R.E.L.Y legal the last time he checked it, or maybe it actually WAS illegal but he decided not to call it.

Then your teammate ignored the official's warning not to celebrate.

If it were me, I'd just slap an USC on the kid which is an entirely discretionary call for a ref. However, this ref may have remembered that that defiant kid's stick was either marginal or noncompliant, and opted to ding him for stick instead. Same result - 3 min NR - but less explaining with the stick penalty.

Reading between the lines, your teammate was being a jerk. Refs tend to be old school and consider offensive behavior as venomous to the game. I applaud his call, if that was the case.

Moral? Obey the SPenny rule and confine your dialogue with refs to "Yes, No, and Sir". Dancing like a ghetto baller afer having been asked to refrain is the same as telling your ref to go pound sand. A phrase DEFINITELY not in SPenny's list.

a 3 min penatly mean it was a serious alteration, one i would not let slide "the first time" we are talking either to pinched or cut short, something i awlays ding a kid for, so it had to have become illegal through use.

Thif non celebrating is one thing I will never understand in US Sports ....
(as long as you are redy for play after 30 sec. and you are not offending anybody ...)

But an official should always be able to explain hiss call. It might be that you just something not that clear but when you whistle know what it is for....

taunting is taunting but to me it has to be flagrant.....i agree with 3pp, it sounds like doofus cost his team a 3 minute penalty without parole and a goal....

don't hate the game, hate the player......
