I've been playing goalie for 6 years, and for 5 of them I have used a goalie length shaft (I only used a small shaft when I was a little kid). Recently I met a professional lacrosse goalie who told me that a small shaft would send my stickwork through the roof. I was wondering which is better to use. I dont really know the point of a goalie shaft except to throw so can anyone help me out, thanks.

In my opinion stay with the goalie shaft. but goalie is all about preference so whatever is comfortable you should use. Personally I think a shortie feels weird but whatever you like you should use. Plus with a longer shaft you can intercept for passes and catch far out shots. And you can also scoop the ball when its far out. Plus I have never seen a goalie above the youth level play with a shortie

I played the first half of this year with a shorty and I like the goalie length a lot better.

i would try it out during practice or something. if you dont have one then just ask people on your team if they have a backup you could borrow

I don't necessarily use a SHORTIE, but I did cut 6 inches or so off the standard goalie shaft. It's a lot more comfortable, more manageable, and easy to maneuver. But it's all preference and it takes a while to get used to...

Thanks, but also the pro I met didn't actually say a short shaft, but he wants to cut my goalie one down so it is in between. I kinda dont want to cuz both shafts are only 2 weeks old, but he also has been playing goalie for like a bajillion years and I think he knows what hes talking about. I think im going to get him to cut down an old goalie shaft and see how I like it, thanks for the advice tho.

Trevor Tierney is the most notable example of a professional goalie playing with a short shaft.

I've been using a shortie my whole life but this season I started using a goalie shaft after being recommended to by a coach and not only can I throw the ball more accurately and farther than I had with a shortie, I have actually saved a couple high bouncers with the extra length of the shaft. I highly recommend the goalie length KPro, it has worked for me very well.

Same with me, I feel like the full length shaft balances out the head + you can get saves off the handle.

i use a shorter shaft because im not too tall of a person. im only 5'6'' and i cut my shafts down 3 inches or so jsut because of my height. i find that my stickwork is incomparable to anyone with the shorter shaft. its mainly preference.

Alex hewitt(Princton starter) uses a shorty and i do too. One of my sticks is a shorty and one is half regular half shorty. i find it easier but its all preference

I've tried shorties and just can't get comfortable with them - it throws the balance off too much for me, and makes it hard to throw long. After much experimenting, I have always come back to armpit height, meaning the butt end comes just up to my armpit when I stand the stick straight up (with head, of course.)

does this professional goalie friend of yours have a name? i use a attack/mid length shaft and i like it alot better than the goalie length

ive used attack length since i started, better stick handles, makes it more top heavy i think but its not that bad once you get comfortable, good if you like to take it down the field, but if you like to tap posts then you want a logner pole haha i dont but i recently got a krpo kevlar an dim thinking about cutting down to about 35" cause i want a longer shaft but not too long and in my opinion i think that would work for you to do for oone of your shafts

i'm a big proponent of full length. one of my few strengths as a keeper was my ability to pick off pass that came near me. (that and convincing that attackment the inside roll was a bad idea against me)
so all my goalies start with a full length shaft, however the ones that later decide to shorten it, this is the advice i give them:
buy a cheap alum goalie shaft. and cut 3 inches off. play for a week or so; then cut off 2 inches; play for a week or so; then cut off 2 more inches, eventually you will decide that its too short. at that point go get a new shaft and cut it 2 inches longer than the aluminum one.

no. typically the deterrent was getting sandwiched between me and the defenseman they were trying to roll on

i seem to remember you offering me the same advie last year when i considered cutting my shaft.
one of the advantages you can get as a goalie is a customization level with your shaft. i chose to go with a shorter one because im a bit shorter and i wanted a quicker stick.

i use an attack length shaft it is the best thing in the world i would never switch back to goalie length EVER! (i used goalie length for 4 of me 6 years playing lax and it made my reaction time slower)

i prefer full length. i'm 6ft tall and i work out 2hrs 6 days a week, so speed and stick handling capabilities werent an issue. The only issue with shorties is clearing range and pass interception. also, make the change so you have time to adjust...because being there in time and having the stick be out of place by 3 or 4 inches because of the shaft length sucks.

i use a shortie, not a problem with clearing and i dont try to pick off passes, also the longer shaft gets caught in either the net or on one of my legs

i tried a shorty. i liked the stick handling adavantage but being a shorter goalie i like some ability on clears to get a stick a little up over attackmen on the crease so i like using my goalie shaft a lot more.

i use a shorty. One reason is becausee i'm back up and don't want to waste money on a new shaft when my shorty is working fine. I also come out of the goal alot so I like how it is for stick handling.

I used a shorty for the first half a season and then switched to like a 35" and I love it. It makes clearing so much easier.

The coach of the boston cannons told me that I should cut my stick because it would help my stick speed and since I'm short (5'7") it would be easier to control

i use a 35" shaft just because i'm so beast (5). i think that its easier to control trajectory and distance with a shorter shaft. i didn't lose much distance, if any, from cutting my shaft.

i cut exactly 3 1/4" off of a standard goalie shaft...but as it has already been said, it is all personal preference.

im rocking a 34 inch ignite. i dont care so much about the manuverability but my shaft always got caught in the net so i cut it down

A coach once told me to cut my shaft so that the whole stick fits perfectly under my arm-pit.
I did it, and i've never been more comfortable.
