View Full Version : I have a good shin protection idea.

Getting hit in the shins isnt fun ( I dont care if you say the pain is only there for a bit and that glory lasts forever) You have to admit, if you could get hit in the shin and not really feel it than I know you would rather that than get hit full on. The problem is who wants to wear shin guards?

So I was looking through lax.com and stumbled upon these

http://www.lax.com/shop/item.phtml?page=product_4468_front.phtml

My thoughts are you could just slide this right above your ankle, it wouldnt look too stupid if you had it on one leg or under socks and you have some nice protection. What do you all think?

it might work if you wore socks, but then again I dont think those things are very big... they would only cover like 6 in. also, someone might recognise them as armgaurds, and then you'd really hear it...

Wouldn't you need like 4 of them to cover one shin? And they don't offer much protection anyway, not sure how much it would to.

I never siad the whole shin, I was speaking more like you would be covering a vulnerable area or maybe over an injury

you could also get a pair of vollyball knee pads and just wear one on the shin that gets hit the most, or use a football thighpad and wrap something around it to attach it to your shin, like what phipps used

or you could do what peter collucini does. i do the same thing. you make a tape wrap around your shin and calve and slide a mcdavid pad on top of it and tape around the top and bottom the pad. works like a charm. i mean, doesnt relieve a lot of the pain but does a good job.

when i had my "leg o' death" (nasty, swollen, gangrenous-looking, compound bruise) not long ago, my first though was to put one of those over it. it didn't fit very well, and if you look at it, there's really only protection over a 2" diameter area. i came up with the idea of using a small volleyball kneepad though, and that worked like a charm.

The problem with hard-faced shin guards is that they enable nasty rebounds. That's why serious goalies don't wear them. It's not a macho thing.

The ideal solution would be to get the largest shin guards you can find (baseball catcher's guards, perhaps) and glue an inch or more of that Tempurpedic mattress foam onto the outside. This stuff won't absorb enough energy to eliminate rebounds, but they will bounce within the crease area where you have better than a fighting chance of retaining possession.

I don't like using hard shin guards either but my coach suggested using an empty egg carton filled with bubblewrap. Although crude it does work but doesn't survive past a game. Luckily there are alot of egg cartons in the world.

Take the carton and split the top from the bottom. I prefer using the top (the part that does not hold the eggs) only because it is easily concealable. Fill whatever side you use with the bubble wrap or a cut up tee shirt (the tee shirt lasts longer then the bubble wrap allowing you to resuse it numerous times but doesn't protect as well). After it is filled ace bandage it to your leg. It is pretty decent when covered with sweatpants but in a game where you are constantly ripped on at the shins it doesn't last long.

OoOo and because the carton tends to compact rather than rebound it slows the ball down considerably and helps with rebounds.

i dont wear shin gaurds because of the rebounds either .......but small volleyball knee pads work great for those nasty bruises on your shins.....and they dont look whimpy at all

works like a charm. or have your trainer make a small pad for the bruised area.

While hard-faced shinguards can cause rebound, so does your tibia.

Anyway, McDavid already has a hexpad sleeve that can be worn over the shin:

This is what Coluccini wears.

U know wrestling knee pades work great. They slide over most cleats as long as the cleats rnt 2 long. I was about to use one on my left knee cause of a injury but never got the chance to. But Wrestling knee pads work just as well i would say

Yea i just started playing lacrosse and i'm goalie so i'm lookin for a good way 2 protect my shins. i've had a lot fo bad hits to the shin in past sports and i'm lookin for a way 2 prevent more injuries.
i was lookin at the McDavid hexpad and it just doesn't look like it absorbs much of the impact. If anyone has uses it, can u tell me how good it is?
And i'd rather have the ball rebound off of shin guards then having my shins get busted up and b out for the rest of a game or possibly longer than that.

I was just gonna bring that pad-type up. It feels like bubble wrap (a freshman on my football team wore them on his elbows and i made fun of him every day for it) Seems like it could absorb a small fraction of the pain and cause a very low rebound due to its squishyness

Haha Coluccini. I live in syracuse and love su lax but man coluccini is terrible. most inconsistent goalie i have ever seen. i would not want to do anything he does except maybe play lax for su.

well personally i feel that goalies shouldnt wear shin pads of any kind. i wear sweetpants and pull them up and tape them just below my knees. every goalie i see with shin guards i just think there terrible and i lose respect for them. plus bruises are a great way to pick up chicks.

dude i would throw them on my knees!! getting hit in the knee makes it hurt to lunge at a shot. the ball might be able to shatter your patella[kneecap] or at least do some damage. knee injuries from shots anyone?

exactly, i can take the shin shots b/c they generally wont hamper your ability to make the next save. A knee shot could make you miss the next shot and i don't want that.

the McDavid knee pad OldGoalie posted would be awesome as long as it doesn't impede movement.

they are meant to be at a right angle and that would be good cause when your in your stance your legs are getting close to a right angle. so they might work. and they have a hole in the back that would let it breathe a little.

someone with elbow pads please try this and post review!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why don't you just not where anything? A goalie plays his best without shin guards on his legs AND a goalie should be able to tolerate a lot of pain.

because if you have a crazy bruise/injury you dont want to injure it again and be unable to play. they are suggesting using these temporarily
