To be a male All-American you have to meet the following requirements-

Player eligibility guidelines:
1. Players under consideration are strongly encouraged to be members of US Lacrosse.
2. Players selected must be a First Team member of the All-State, All-County, or All-League team before he is eligible for All-American. All players are eligible in Areas where no postseason honors are awarded.
3. Players on high school club teams are eligible for consideration for All-American awards.
4. Post high school graduates who continue to compete for a high school program are NOT eligible to be considered for All-American.

For a female All-American (or honorable All-American)-

Nomination Criteria
In additional to exhibiting superior skills and techniques, exceptional game sense, good sportsmanship and outstanding knowledge of the game of lacrosse. Every player being nominated for US Lacrosse Girl's High School All-American Final Nomination must meet 4 of the 7 criteria listed below to even be considered:

*Two-year varsity letter winner
*Previous season and/or current season if available: First Team State/Area/League/District Level Recognition
*US Lacrosse National Tournament Regional Team participation or US Lacrosse U-19 Team Training Squad member
*Previous US Lacrosse Girl's High School All-American Recognition
*Varsity letter in a second sport
*Play for a current League/Division Champion or runner up team
*Captain and or other established team honor recipient

Basically, you just have to be flat out good. You're competing within your chapter really, but the number of selections they get varies on where you're from. You're also competing against all players, not just goalies. So it's completely possible for your area to have three all-american attackmen, and no all-american goalies, defenders or midfielders. So with all of that competition, you have to stand out. Not in just one major game either, you have to stand out every game you play in. You have to stick out to all of the coaches you play and basically be the best in your region.

what did you do in the offseason?
This offseason I ran a lot, jumped rope a lot, and took shots from a buddy of mine and a Notre Dame All-American. I worked out some too, mostly upper body but it worked a lot of my legs. My biggest problem was being quicker to the ball so the jumping rope helped a lot with that.

I was the Maryland Goalie of the Year in '02, I spent about 90 minutes 4 days a week doing conditioning, agility and other drills, in the off season i tried to get a buddy to shoot on me 2-3 times a week, some times more depening on the availability of my buddies. Played in a summer league 2 nights a week, went to camps and played for all star teams. In the offseason i took every oppurtunity to get shot on so there would be no adjustment period for the next season. In college I upped that work out to 6 days a week. email me if you want some ideas for work outs. tmcdonnell10@gmail.com

A goalie and his twin defenseman from a team we played against this year were all-american. Mark White was the goalie from St. Stephen's St. Agnes in Alexandria, Va. He's going to Maryland next year along with his brother

I got Honerable Mention AA and Academic AA last year as a junior. Fully expecting first team all-american this year or at least HM again, but my new coach didn't feel the need to nominate anyone (go him!) so I basically have no shot at it now. Sweet way to end my senior year.

Also, AA has ALOT to do with politics. I hate to beat a dead horse, but this is a sore point amongst many Massachusetts residents.

Max Quinzani, arguably one of the greatest attackman ever to come out of the bay state, was an All-American his Sophomore and Junior years, but was passed over his Senior year because of "on field attitude issues". He was something like the eighth ranked recruit in his class, and yet somehow he was passed over. It's not even like he had been a jerk his whole career, as far as I know he was a class act through and through. Apparently the attitude problem was him gesturing to the crowd to cheer louder. Now, perhaps there was mroe to it, but it seems a but of a slap in the face that he was snubbed by the comittee, while being elected to the Under Armour AA squad, a much more selective honor than HS AA. There's an excellent article on him in last year's Inside Lacrosse Recruiting issue.

Anyways, the goalie from my former school was an All-American this year. Although he is an excellent goalie, and probably the top one in his region, he probably isn't one of the top goalies in the country. I say this to bring up the point that becoming an AA also has to do with the region of the country you're in. I'm not saying becoming a Central Mass AA is an easy task, as achieving AA recognition anywhere is a great honor, but I am saying that the competition can be higher in regions where lacrosse is more prevelant.

So I lied. I guess my coach did nominate me, and I did get Honorable Mention All-American again this year. He was just too upset that I didn't get first team to get around to telling me (I found out from my asst. coach), which I can understand because I found out who got it in place of me and I wasn't exactly the happiest camper either. Oh well, you have to live the political crap throughout your life, so I might as well get used to it! I completely agree with goalieskcickay though. A HS AA pretty much means nothing once you leave the HS world either. It's a nice award, but it doesn't determine your sucess in the future.
