The Great Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye, Harry Potter series, and also a book called "The Dangerous Book for Boys". That book is really cool, its a book that has tons of facts that all boys from age 8-80 should know. Like knots, paper airplanes, how to make a real bow and arrow, how to make a good go cart and tons of other cool stuff like that. Its really cool I love that book.

The Things They Carried is a solid book. Brave New World is okay, just okay. If you're looking for a utopian society book I feel The Beach - yes it's the book they made a movie of with DiCaprio - tackles human nature a little better. Plus it's set in current times making it even easier to relate to.
Peace Not Apartheid - Jimmy Carter. There is a lot of him talking about his accomplishments, but there are tons of interesting facts. Sorry, I'm a politics nerd .
Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times - HW Brands. My favorite President. Plus, many of his policies are vastly underrated. If you disagree I'll duel you.
Critique of Interventionism - Ludwig von Mises. See why the US should stay out of other countries.
No God but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam - Reza Aslan. Always good to know about other cultures. Promotes good will and understanding.
I hate to admit it, but the Harry Potter series is good as well.
It'd be easier if you named a specific genre or two, because 3/4 books I've listed are probably of no interest to you. It's always good to broaden the horizons though.

Here's a thread that hadn't been bumped in a good while that should also have some good suggestions.
I read for fun and read a lot. I recently finished re-reading the Hitchhiker's Giude to the Galxay series. Currently I am reading R.A. Salvatore's Hunter's Blade Trilogy (currently on book 2 The Lone Drow) and Sergei Lukyanenko's Day Watch (the second book in his Night Watch Tetrology).
I also recently found my copies of The One Dimensional Man and Red Dwarf: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers (which I haven;t read in years and am looking foward to reading again).

That's a great book. I forgot that one. Honestly, how the auther tells the story is great.
"White roses and red roses: those were beautiful colours to think of. And the cards for the first and second place and third place were beautiful colours too: pink and cream and lavender. Lavender and cream and pink roses were beautiful to think of. Perhaps a wild rose might be like those colours and he remembered the song about the wild rose blossoms on the little green place. But you could not have a green rose. But perhaps somewhere in the world you could."

Harry Potter, LOTR, and most fantasy fiction is absolute rubbish in my (and Harold Bloom's) opinions.
What could I know? I'm only a HS English teacher (I know there are a few others here)...
Please don't read this as rude, but as a High School English teacher surely you took courses in literary criticism. I'd really hope than an(other) teacher would know better than to use Harold Bloom's extensive work as any type of ultimate literary opinion. In the past forty-five years, fortunately, scholars have gone away from the "it's good because I say it's good, and I'm so what I say is right" school of thought to making argumentative claims and supporting them with a little thing called evidence. Just my $0.02...
As for books, I'd second the recommendations for O'Brien's [I]The Things They Carried . I'd also recommend Yann Martel's The Life of Pi and Bret Easton Ellis' Less Than Zero. Of course, anyone who wants to end up like me (not recommended), should strongly consider reading Jack Kerouac's On The Road , but moving to Denver IS optional. Happy hunting and enjoy the reading, whatever you choose.
