I'm not gonna buy into the G5 again after the proc rating fiasco they had with the previous version...I don't like Mac desktops, never have.

Nice...dumb question but is that the whole computer or just the moniter? Seeing as the title is "where did the computer go", ill guess its the whole computer.
Three reasons why i will never get a mac.
(correct me if im wrong)
1. Too expensive
2. Non upgradable. For PC's, if a new processor came out, you could easily upgrade. Not so for macs.
3. limited programs. Sure they'rs a windows emulator for macs but its slow and not as good.

I mainly use my pc for gaming, so a mac wouldn't be a good choice

1. Yea, but its getting better. Also:
Dell, HP, Compaq, etc, All make their computers cheap by skimping on hardware.... and then it screws you over several hundred times due to ****ty hardware No thanks.
Also: To have a comparable pre-built Windows machine to a Mac machine, you would be spending approximately the same amount of money.... That is sad my friends. So if you are cheap:
BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER.
2. Absolute complete B.S. But: You probably didnt know there are companies out there offering CPU upgrades/memory/video cards/etc, out there, so i forgive you.
3. Depends on what you are looking for:
Games: Only the popular ones
Graphic Design: All if not more
Video Editing: All if not more
I could go on but i dont feel like it.
So if you're looking to game... alot. I wouldnt suggest a Mac. But for anything else, ESPECIALLY if you are just an average web surfing student, A Mac is more than enough. Also:They just finished moving from OS9 to OSX which is UNIX based, which means a completely new and different file format and program code. BUT: Also any UNIX program should be able to be easily ported to OS X. Within the next 3 years, Apple will explode.
And honestly: I use Openoffice.org instead of Word now and it runs on any platform FOR FREE. Although i Prefer Photoshop to GIMP.

Naw, get the G5 Tower, if you already have a monitor. Otherwise, it maybe wise to look at the G5 iMac

yeah, the bs about macs not being easy to upgrade is well...bs. It's easy. Buy the new version, install. If you want small upgrades, download them off the mac site for free. Plus mac os x is the most reliable version ever. enjoi rules with his mac defense.

Well, enjoi, I don't know why you're taking jabs at me bud but you seem to be quite the mac addict. That's what I meant by that comment being ironic. And btw I wasn't the one talking crap about the Mac desktops, that would be westside.

sorry i was in a pissy mood at the time... Sorry. :-(
Anyways: I'm more of a Macintosh lurker... lol. I also have the advantage of having both Operating systems at my fingertips and have used both from Win 95/OS 7 too the present day OS.
I will not jump on whatever Apple or Microsoft hands out unless it is honestly, and sincerely worth the money.
I support Apple because i have always found them to be a very good company and worth the money.

Ok. First of all, i wasnt dissing macs. I love macs. I walk 2 miles to the U of M library just cause they have macs with the 21 in. moniters. That and air conditioning.
Maybe i should rephrase.
Three reasons why I will never BE ABLE to get a mac.
First of all, Im saving up for a mac for college. I was looking at the G4 powerbook but its so expensive. heck, my dream computer is a 17 inch g4 powerbook.
Also, by saying that "Macs arent upgradeable". i mean once a new OS comes out you have to buy a new mac to be able to use the new OS. At least thats what i heard.
jesus.........

Oh yeah i understand, we had a long AIM convo about this. But you shouldnt say things unless you know what you are saying is at least 90% sure.
Yes Apple software to a certain extent does not allow for compatibility, but think about this: the way x86 processors work is that it has the instructions from the previous generation in it. Therefore, you can have DOS to Win XP Pro on most x86 computers. What you lose though is speed. Mac processors, are not backwards compatible and to a certain extent so are their operating systems. Although with OS X i am not sure about that considering at Macteens.com there is a guy with a 500 MHZ G3 Cube, with a gig of RAM and OS X 10.3.5, AND it reportedly runs pretty fine. Also: There are several old 233 MHZ iBooks (Those weird clamshell candy colored computers) that run OS X 10.3.5 with alot of RAM slow only when you have a couple of programs open, but otherwise they run fine.
That is like a 600~800 (thats just an approximate range....) MHZ P3 x86 processor (Intel) running Windows XP Pro with a gig of RAM.
I cant tell you much on upgradeability in the long run of OS X considering its only been out for ~4-5 years... But it looks like its relatively backwards compatibile.
Just as an aside: Windows "Longhorn" will not be having a new more stable file system/OS Code (which would make it incompatible with the large majority of systems available today.) Its supposedly going to be like Windows XP"2".
enjoi or anyone else who may know, will they be coming out with a g5 ibook or powerbook any time soon? I will be purchasing a new laptop within the next year or so, but I figured I'd start shopping now. I've always used PCs, but recently a buddy of mine just gave me his G3 tower to mess around with, and I really love it. It's amazing to think how obsolete a PC coming out the same year as this G3 is today, while the G3 is still functioning relatively well. So, in short, I want a mac for my next computer. And another question, are there any significant differences between iBooks and PowerBooks besides price?

Not really, but i suggest getting Powerbooks if you're going laptop because of weight/size/feature difference. All the info is on the apple site.
I am sure G5 laptops will be coming out, but not yet as the G5 processor runs haute.
Personally i do not reccomend laptops as you lose upgradeability (specifically video card upgrades)
