Box is on a smaller playing surface. It's more congested, so when you switch handsd there's going to be more people near you ready to hit you. I switch hands only when I have to.

Its not really congested play box lacrosse (Indoor Lacrosse) unless your by some other players, but theres room out there. I switch hands and I find that I can do that easliy with out trouble out there.

There is no rule of thumb in box that says that you can't switch hands. In fact, there are players that thrive on the ability to shoot with both hands. But in box, its less likely you'll need that ability. A behind the back shot is just as deceptive. Most times you'll be taking shots from your strong side anyway, and won't really need to circle the cage as much as you do in field.

If you have a rifle shot from your strong side, I'd say don't even worry about shooting from the weak side. Its a waste of time.

One thing that you should be aware of when switching from field to box is that crosschecking is legal. I don't know what your rules are like but we have an arc(20 or 25 feet i think) at each end, where a push is legal, higher levels is full contact and it doesn't matter if you have the ball or not.

Cross checking is a defensive strategy. I heart cross checking!

It's not necessarily better to not switch. Its just that the ability to switch is less important than it is in field.

Say for example you're on the right side of the floor with the ball. With a 4' x 4' goal, its pretty effing tough to score with a right handed shot. Left handed shots give you a far better "reach" with your shots. So, if you're on a given side of the floor, the only advantage switching hands gives is to protect the ball somewhat.

(Note that protecting the ball this way has somewhat limited value in box, because the d-men don't waste as much time slashing at stick and gloves, they're more interested in playing the body than the stick.....even if the D can't reach your hand or stick for a slap or poke check, they can still cross-check, or body check you onto your arse!)

The one time I think hand switching is really valuable is if you're carrying up the floor in transition. Carry wrong-handed so the D steers you away from the shooting area that favours that hand. Then when you've been steered to the "wrong side" switch to the dominant hand to shoot.

Also, if you cut around the net, you're sometimes left unguarded. If you end up opposite your best side, switching hands can let you get a better shot on goal.

I have to agree with RockStar that it really isn't necessary to switch hands in box lacrosse. Players have less room to do so than in field, although switching hands does have its advantages as far as shooting on either side of the floor or protecting the ball. However, I feel that if players do switch sides on the same play and switch hands, it screws up the alignment on how plays are set up.

Where were you guys when I argued this point a while back? I was told that Canadians were trash and the NLL sucked because the players didn't switch hands enough.

Umm, I didn't say they were trash. In fact I am Canadian. Do I switch hands? Rarely. Can I switch hands? Yes, though not near as well as I wish I could. I know that players in the NLL switch and I am an NLL fan. So, what's with the harsh words?
