this is a pretty out there answer but he could be using a goalie shaft cut down to 30" or so...just to get the added durability of the thicker sidewall.

I know a few goalies who use a shorty just because of it's maneuverability - it's, in my opinion, easier to swing around a smaller stick. I personally use a shorty because anything longer gets caught on my knee brace and that's just annoying.

Re-read what he said, and then look at the pictures again. He clearly isn't saying goalies (because he's talking about Tierney, one goalie) are fat. If you look, Tierney is jack d's up top, but not much bulk in his legs.

He plays a flat arc along the goal line so he probably takes a step in the net while reacting to a shot.
