I want to make a goal out of PVC pipe. What is the best net to use? Any suggestions, including non-lacrosse nets, are welcome. thanks

NO PVC piping.
i used metal rods. Works well
then i used 3 lots of bird netting
for the net

Wow, i was just about to make a post just like this. Why not PVC? Pros/cons? how much does the bird netting usually run?

Cons of PVC i have found that if can get knocked over if you have a crank
Whereas with the rods i can crank all i wants and i wont fall down
It is also quite light so u can move it easily enough.

Do you mean cost of lenght of birdnetting?

Yeah, cant you just weigh the goal down with somethin?

yeah if u make a pvc pipe goal make sure u weigh it down otherwise the tip over a lot.

And if i were u i would just buy a goal at sports authority they have good ones for $100 and after all the work u put into building ur goal u will probably find out that if would have been better to buy one. Plus metal ones r better quality.

another problem with a PVC goal is that it can be easily broken with a nice crank shot to the post, and that's just not pretty for you our your net.

Ok
1. PVC too light? Fill it with sand.
2. Broke the Pvc? Ummm PVC usually isn't that expensive (at least by me)
3. PVC never rusts. It might smelly and gross for trapped water...but it wont cut up your and when you try to move it

PVC is awesome, I see no reason to use metal tubing over it .... With PVC you can by all the parts you need at any hardware store, cut it to size really easily etc ...

Loading it up with sand is a great idea .. and sorry to say, but I really doubt that you're going to put a hole through it when it's stuffed solid with sand. :) My school has several goals with with PVC piping, and while I don't think they're filled with anything .. they look awesome and seem to work fine :)

Plus you can paint them any color you want!

I'll be pretty in pink!

thanks for responses all.

I think I'm going to try PVC first, since its cheap and easy. If it doesn't work, there's really nothing lost.

As for the net, what about this? (http://www.lax.com/shop/item.phtml?page=product_930_front.phtml)

Stopper22

that would work for a net. I made a goal out of PVX and i broke it i hit it in the top corner and the ppe broke then i hti the middle of the cross bar and it broke, however its not to hard to fix

If you won't abuse your net and can't crank it yet anyway, here's a good 2.5 mm net for 35$

since its for backyard use.....theres no point in spending over $200 for a goal...is pvc piping plastic? you could always go around and look for old plumbing tubes and use that if you want

i'm not. pvc is real cheap, I'd only be spending money on the net. I dont want to spend $200, and thats why I want to make one myself.

Exactly, go PVC.

Dpolelax

PVC will work fine. cheap, easy to put together and fix, light, no rusting. if i were you i would buy the cheaper netting. you save all this money on a goal and buy a $70 net. mine as well buy a cage. go with the $35 or some other inexpensive net.

i wouldn't go PVC its looks gay and chincey, but whatever ur just gonna spend all that time making it and then theres gonna be something wrong with it and ur gonna wish u had bought a nice durable one, but if u want to build one go ahead but make sure u make it worth ur time and think about the design first:)

Reinholds
09-15-2003, 07:46 PM
yeah, yo we should pick up a net when we are at lax int'l, but yeah why make a ****** goal that falls apart when you could have a durable one for a little more

cvlax18
09-15-2003, 07:53 PM
exactly thats what i think

cvlax18
09-15-2003, 07:54 PM

cvlax18
09-15-2003, 07:56 PM

not really, i bought the pvc and made it earlier. it costs less than $10 and took me only 45 minutes to put together, so if it doesn't work then I can just go buy a real cage, nothing lost.

cvlax18
09-16-2003, 07:07 PM
yeah but is it durable and does it ever fall down.

WestSideLa X eR
09-16-2003, 07:52 PM
this is off topic but you can make homemade chop shots on your new goals, use netting and tarp. I think pvc filled with sand would be fine, but if you crank a shot and it loosens the joints, sand would just all leak out

Reinholds

cvlax, they are like 145, or we could get a good one with the flat iron for a little more, they are more durable that the ****ty one doug has

What size pvc did you use?? 1.5 in, 2 in ?

thedecline

I was gonna use 1.5, but used 2 instead cause I figured it would hold up better.

sooo did u build ur goal yet... how is it?

MrTibs
09-26-2003, 10:04 PM
Well i decided not to build my goal yet because the yard we played in was private property...some lady came out and made us leave. its stupid, noone ever is back there.

09-27-2003, 10:43 AM

MrTibs
09-27-2003, 12:24 PM
I dunno, have to find a new place to play first, our goalie has our goal. Prolly just go over to his house when i want to shoot.,

I prefer PVC pipes too. But their are dif types of PVC pipes, the thick ones and the thin ones. I am going to try the thick ones now because the thin ones didnt work too well lol. For the net, i might just buy one that is made for the reg lacrosse goals and just put it on. And moving PVC goals is easy and you can make two goals by urself and have a small sided game in ur backyard

Nigel_Tufnel

I figure if you get some PVC piping, fill it with sand, then maybe even put pipe insulators wrapped with duct tape, it'll hold up really well.

Or, you can just shell out Benjamin at Dick's Sporting Goods...frankly, I love building, so I'd go with the PVC.
