How do you make a Woody?

Sorry if this has already been asked but I couldn't find an actualy tutorial. Just pics and stuff.

Just wondering if someone could give me some basic step-by-step instructions on how to make a wooden attack (regular length) shaft.

Also, what wood do you normally use?
