i've heard this talked about alot but i can seem to find anyone that can explain it

its not that i haven't tried what ive heard but every time the man seems to be able to roll around my shoulder this doesn't seem realilistic though because i have quiet broad shoulder but i can't even phase the attacker

im going to add this smiliy just because i thinks its cool!

a v hold it when you are running along side an attackman and you lock him between your stick and forearm and force him out.
i think it's pretty stupid, but my coach told me to do it since i started playing. recently i went to a camp and a counseler told me not to do it either because it can sometimes be called a hold
i guess if you preform it correctly it should only be used to force an attackman back to X or away from the goal, so if you can do that i guess it works

V is one of the greatest things you have in your arsenal besides poke check. It allows you to force your man one way or another and helps to lock up someone who may be faster or stronger than you trying to roll dodge. I've never been called for a hold in either highschool or college level. It's most effective at X but can be good for someone trying to ISO top-side and throwing roll dodges getting closer in.

On the subject of holds, the kidney hold is good too, especially when followed by a wrap check.

hmm not too familiar with kidney hold...care to elaborate? I may know it by another name who knows.

I was wondering the same thing...

LiquidMercury is right about Vholds being important...especially when your man is trying to drive from X to GLE...thats when your keeper should yell to hold...

Think of the "V" as slightly less than 90 degrees ... where holds start coming into play is when you start to get beat or tired and that just less than 90 degrees starts to be more like 45 degrees and you are pinching your man more than directing him away from the cage...

to be honest i dont think ive ever used this when guarding a guy from up top...but each dman has their own style...if it works...use it...

A kidney hold is when you put your butt end on their side, below the ribs and closer to the back and push hard. Since most people don't wear rib pads, it should hurt alot. Some people will flinch and that's when you wrap check them or whatever. It is really good for stopping roll dodges, since they already have their back towards you.

Also when performing a vhold at GLE against a man dodging from behind, lift up his arm with your stick and then use the hold to turn them back, more effective in my opinion.

Oh ok yah I know that one. I don't do it as much as V hold because I seem to have less control on getting back around.

A v-hold is so helpful. true, u may b called fo a hold, but it is well worth the risk. A v-hold of steel, a poke check like a bullet, and feet that are so fast that the friction causes sparks, you are playing good d.

the way my coach taught me to not get called for a hold, using the "v"hold is to keep your feet moving. it's considered a hold, the second you preform the "v"hold and stop moving you feet. so what i do is put them in the "v" hold and the kinda shrug them off with my elbow or force them away from me and then back up. it's a simple and effective way to get a guy off you, during a "v' hold.

The V can be very, very, very, very, hard to attack against, depending on how to play your body postioning.

The biggest problem I face when using V-hold...is about timing....I am not sure when I should run along with him and when I should v-hold him.:banghead:

Watch his hips and soon as he looks like he's about to change position lock him up in V
