View Full Version : [Official] New Style Announcement

Snake~eyes
07-07-2007, 01:07 AM
We have upgraded the forums to a newer version of vBulletin 3.6.4. In doing so we have new features and many things have changed. We also have changed many parts of the style - you will like some of it, you will hate some of it.

Some comments to answer questions and hopefully provide some information:

Advertisements - The new site will have advertisements on the top and on the sidebar on the right. The reason they are not up now is because we ran into some speed issues with the script we were using. They will be back

Post Counts - Don't get too excited, because they won't be there for long. We will remove them from all pages, so enjoy it while you can. You will not be able to see anyones postcount, not even your own.

Warning System - The AWS is now gone, we will be using a different system. This means that all the naughty people now have a fresh start, but don't worry all the previously banned users are still banned. More information about this new system will be posted shortly.

Future Upgrades - We will continually be chaning the way the forum looks, including tweaking it. We know the style is not perfect and there are some issues with it. Consider this a beta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_cycle#Beta) version, we are trying to get all the bugs fixed as soon as possible. We knew that you guys would let us know of any problems, so we felt it was a good time to show you what we've got so far. Please view our bug thread (http://www.lacrosseforums.com/showthread.php?t=93444) to help us with this process.

Patience is Virtue - Lastly, I ask that everyone be patient with this upgrade, I ask that you give us the opportunity to make this version better than any of the past. There will be some peopel that hate it no matter what, but this happens on every change. I just hope it grows on as many people as possible.

Feel free to ask questions or comment, I will do my best to answer any questions you may have.

Why wont you put our own post counts on? and will they ever be put on? thanks

Just because people had warnings, doens't mean they are naughty! Just get bored and make terrible jokes, my case.

It's growing on me, I don't like icons, but its deffinitly growing, there are more helpful features than annoying ones.

Overall good job.

We have no plans to enable post counts. We feel that post counts don't really add anything to the forum. Users should be measured by their knowledge and how they present themselves on the forums, not by how many posts they make.

I can see post counts...

LiquidMercury16

I can see post counts...

read up farther and you'll see that they are temporary. I like to know my post count just to see how much time I truly do spend on TLF. All and all more good than bad.

wow I am an idiot, my bad

Right next to the "new posts" button there's a tab that makes you revert it, making you see the oldest posts.

New users are notorious for bringing old threads up with posts like: "Yea liek dats frikkin awesumm!"
This is going to annoy the mods and the regulars at this forum.

We don't need that tab, we use the convenience of the advanced search bar to search for older threads.

Everything looks awesome. Well done guys.

EDIT: What are all these new symbols all over the place?

Looks perty smooth to me. Any particular reason why we have to hit "Quick Reply to this Message"...it infact makes it slower compared to what we had before, posting wise.

I don't really like it....but I still love TLF, but I liked the simplicity of it before, now there's new buttons all over...and there goes my personal quest to see 5,000 posts on my screen, I was only 1,000 away. Even though I said I hate it, as snake said be patient, so I'll give it a chance, who knows? maybe once I get used to it I'll like it more, I think the main reason is all the icon button things. Also I don't like when I have my buddy list up, since I usualy dock it, TLF get's like squished, which didn't happen before.

Yea, The new tlf is very, bright. Not my favorite but I will get used to it. I have noticed a new forum jump selection thing at the bottom though. And green lights below everyones name if they are online.

Why are the threads so narrow? There's an inch of black on the left and two or three on the right -- seems unnecessary. Can or will it be fixed?

mark, can we add a search button next to new posts on the homepage?

It can be done, however I'm going to turn that over to Dale. He is the primary contact for the style.

this is kinda funny, i was just on another forum using a newer version of vbulletin and i was thinking "It would be cool if Tlf used this version" so now when i got on TLF, SHAZAM!, there was the new format

faceofflax15
07-07-2007, 12:36 PM
Much better with the quick reply.. So Now I'm completly fine-ish.

Any-way annoying icons will be gone? :]

BwineLAX42
07-07-2007, 12:46 PM
Now it is just like every other forum, except for the colors. If you could get the icons in TLF colors than it would be perfect. But I don't think that is possible.

Any way that the threads won't stay narrow?

The pages take longer to load now. If there is a way to make them not take as long that I won't mind the change.

More kb for sigs?

Live4It
07-07-2007, 01:08 PM
Also, on the last version, when looking at a fourm, under latest post where it said the date and time there was a little arrow that you could click to go to the most recent posts in that thread, any chance we could get that back?

kgncoughlin
07-07-2007, 02:18 PM
is it just me or is it running slower and i hope its not me cause i just got a new computer with Vista and everything

mmlaxplaya17

fitzy_nb_11

I like it more than the old one the only problem I have with it is the narrow threads, but i'm sure it'll grow on me

mmlaxplaya17
07-07-2007, 04:05 PM
i was jk i can care less how many posts i have. the only problem i haev is how slow it is runing right now!

laxgoalieking
07-07-2007, 04:37 PM
the PM layout is annoying, just my opinion. it just reallys confuses me, but it took me 2 months to figure out how to add friends on face book....

laxmiddie11
07-07-2007, 04:48 PM
It's so much slower now and the pages are too narrow. I like the old version better.

laxgoalieguy123
07-07-2007, 05:55 PM
i do agree that the pages are too narrow, but i will get used to it. the buttons are confusing, but i think that once i understand what they all mean i will be fine. i kind of like it, especially the tool bar at the top so i can go right to insidelacrosse.com

smooth87
07-08-2007, 12:14 AM
I used to use the drop down menu all the time. The only that was located on the top right hand corner. I found it easier to browse through forums that way, instead of back tracking my way out to the main menu, esp. when I was reading a particular thread.

Live4It
07-08-2007, 12:22 PM
Also I have another question, is there anyway you could put who the last post in the thread was made by back up?

MainLax28
07-08-2007, 05:47 PM
I second that thing that live4 it just said. I really like to see who was the last person to comment. I know sometimes I will only open up certain threads to see what that person posted.

I am kind of disappointed that our own post counts will be eliminated, but I guess that is kind of juvenile. We'll get used to it.

If the icons could be changed, it would be fine by me, but I actually prefer to use the old, slow simple way then using shortcuts and icons to navigate anything really.

I didn't like the PM system when I checked it this afternoon. I would rather have room for 100 messages than a bar that tells me how many are in my box, and how many are left, especially when that bar doesn't even work.

Change the viewing window back to the old one, this new one is way too jammed.

Ehh, Overall I am a little disappointed. One reason I stuck with this forum was because of how simple and easy it was to navigate, and I think alot of this will make the site too busy for my personal taste.

ESPN
07-08-2007, 06:41 PM
i really like how it tells you how many seconds you have to wait until you can send another pm. its cool.

laxmiddie11
07-08-2007, 07:05 PM
how come it's blue?

ML_LAX09
07-08-2007, 07:06 PM
Yea, what's up with the blue? This I don't like at all...

middiebeast24
07-08-2007, 07:07 PM
yea whys it all of a sudden blue and white

lax4life6
07-08-2007, 07:07 PM
Do not like the blue at all. I loved the IL color scheme that we had.

Mark
07-08-2007, 07:10 PM
This is only a test. Default style as we troubleshoot the speed problem.

Does it seem faster with the default blue.

Remember this is only temp. Mark

cavgoalie7
07-08-2007, 07:10 PM
it says its only a test to see if it loads faster this way

ML_LAX09
07-08-2007, 07:10 PM
No, look above. It says this is a test to see how the speed is.

EDIT: Cav beat me to it.

EDIT 2: Yea, it does run much faster.

EDIT 3: Mark, it won't let me send you a message through your @Lacrosseforums.com address. At least for me anyways.

EDIT 4 (Wow...): The blue setup makes me appreciate the old and newer setup so much more.

laxr24
07-08-2007, 07:37 PM
This didn't load any faster for me. Old TLF was fastest, this and the one from yesterday were about the same.

EDIT: after spending some time on TLF tonight, it is definitely faster than the previous attempt

tiplax
07-08-2007, 07:37 PM
sent you an email, but yes, this is much faster than the other, new version that just launched... although it wasn't really that slow

atacklax
07-08-2007, 08:29 PM
This is faster than the new one, but no faster than the original one. And TLF seems so much less TLFy with blue.

ESPN
07-08-2007, 08:33 PM
back to normal. yay

murderlax
07-08-2007, 08:35 PM
yay back to normal.

a little less quick like it has been recently, but it's getting better and better.

ESPN
07-08-2007, 08:47 PM
yes, the blue was faster, but the tradeoff for black and beige is worth the loss of speed that will get fixed sooner or later.

LiquidMercury16
07-08-2007, 09:00 PM
Yah I'll take this over blue. This lets my ADD eye have so much more to look at.

Snake~eyes
07-08-2007, 09:02 PM
Dropdown menu removed - faster or slower?

kevidinho
07-08-2007, 09:06 PM
I could really care less if it is blue red or whatever color you call the one we have now..but I am with Live4It and Mainlax..I really like to see who the last person to post in a thread was. When I see certain names I read those threads.

Live4It
07-08-2007, 09:07 PM
Seems slower or about the same.

And I think the ads are in the wrong spot.

faceofflax15
07-08-2007, 09:08 PM
With the advertisments is noticable slower.

middieman1
07-08-2007, 09:09 PM
For me everything is really thin and long. Like half the window is the thread and the other half is just black.

LiquidMercury16

Same here, thought it was just my browser messin up at first but guess not.

And just a question...why the ads, if we didn't have them before, why now?

faceofflax15
07-08-2007, 09:16 PM
Ads are to keep TLF free, I don't mind them, Its not tooo slow, so I'll be fine, and now that its not too far to the left, I'll live.

goalie33fan
07-08-2007, 09:19 PM
Its really slow.
Also, everything is too the left of my screen like smooth87 said.

The inturnal clock is behind by 2 hours.

07-08-2007, 09:31 PM
If you keep the thread size how it is right now, at 929 pm est., it would be better. Well, maybe not this big..

And it seems to be faster now.

ok so when you click on a member's name and go to there page thingy, it displays the post count. is that going to remain there? or is it going to be removed later? i personally dont care whether or not it's displayed but i'm just asking for the many who wonder.

zak
07-09-2007, 06:21 AM
I know people had issues with size, I didnt see any of that, but I feel that though the size is about right, the ads on the right push the threads to far to the left. It looks weird. There should be some space there or something.

I think im gonna hold judgment until im used to it.

And whats the word on posties?

Also, I like the new way to edit you signature, when using a pic, no need for imageshack now, just a direct upload.

The speed is great for me. I also have yet to have TLF freeze up on me while posting or sending a PM, which happed with some frequency with the old setup. My only gripe is that sometimes text goes out further than the readable area in the thread. I've seen this mostly with quotes, although regular posts do it sometimes. Overall, I say improvement!

Thanks

Wait, what are we fixing now? I thought we were finally good, except for the Ads still having to come back, everythign was running very well.

BwineLAX42
07-11-2007, 08:28 PM
My favorite feature about TLF was if you looked at a page, and chose not to click on certain threads, they wouldn't be bold next time you looked at the page.

MiddieMan05
07-11-2007, 09:05 PM
I like that you put back who posted last in each thread. I liked that feature since I might look at a thread if I see a certain name. Or might want to know if I was the last one to post, or if someone else might have responded to one of my posts.

RedStormLaxer41
07-19-2007, 08:00 AM
I think it may have been deleted for speed issues, but I really miss that drop-down "Jump to _____" menuthat used to be just above the tan part of the page, it saved a lot of time instead of always having to go back to the main page. But, if it keeps TLF running faster without it, I guess it's okay.
