What are the advantages of coils, and do they need to be strung on leather?

coils provide a more sturdy track on the pocket. i believe this to be true anyway. they should be strung in leathers. they also look cool.
for some pics of coils in various pockets, go to my webshots.

besides add weight and look cooler.. they do nothing that twists don't. what they do, do is force the ball towards the center of the pocket.

I'm not a coil fan, I haven't found much use for them and I've strung a lot of sticks with them.

I've strung tons of pockets and i have come to like coils in the spot between the outside leathers and the sidewalls. I feel it creates a more defined channel than twist. And it doesn't add that much weight to it.

Any worth on a goalie pocket?

coils are ok if you know how many their needs to be, but it's not worth the trouble of figuring out a good ratio yourself. Really time consuming

I can't think of much benefit on a goalie stick.

yeh because a goalie stick is so wide they wont help channel the ball anymore but you could string the pocket as deep as u want if you had mesh with coil sidewalls.

Like endoftheline says the only purpose of having coils on a goalie stick would be to make the pocket extremely deep. Other than that they wouldn't really do anything.

coils create friction so wouldent they add to the whip alittle

Yeah they do if you have a pocket with a lot of coils in it. This is why the homegrown pocket is such a pain to string without whip. The more coils you have the more whip and the harder it is to get rid of it.
