Rubber over Tape - To Prime or not To Prime

I previously posted a picture of a stick tape job that I did and it had criss-crossed tape up the handle and I was planning on applying a rubber coat over top that. I was wondering if a coat of primer over the whole bottom part of the shaft (Where the tape is) would still allow the rubber to grip it, and if adding a primer would help, why, and how much of a difference it would make. Thanks.

how do you plan on applying the rubber? and what kind are you using?

i dont think you need a primer, its should stick and dry just over the tape

To remove the rubber from metal parts, should I just use an exact-o knife?
