Is there any techniques you guys/girls want to see for the next Lax Nation article. I'm doing an experimental head, one that tests out many ways of covering the head with different materials, and seeing what effects each has. So far I have packing tape, duct tape, electrical tape heated and not heated, scotch tape, masking tape, hot glue, elmers glue, cooking spray (if I can find some), soap (liquid templating) and that's about it. ANythign else?

a checkered head

thats not really what I'm going for. I am, persay, figuring out what the best material to use for the checkers is. The checker dye is just a different dye, not a new material to use. Anyways, it's not that complicated. All you have to do is take like electrical tape, cut it into squares, stick them on the head, heat it up, and dye it.

I've always wondered this livin.

Heat up they dye, and put some vinegar in it, dip in the head and then add baking soda.

I always pondered it, and believed it would make a kick arse effect.
you like?

you do know what happens when you add vinegar and baking soda right? and fizzes and foams up. I always thought I'd be cool

that sounds like it would turn out pretty wicked. livin, try it!

ive found out that duct tape isnt very good for dyeing...the strands of the duct tape stick onto the head and are a pain in the arse to take off...don't know if it has happened to you but when i tried it thats what happened

try plastic wrap

hold the head a few feet away from you and spray with spray adhesive and then die and remove glue. i wonder if it would have a wicked powder effect.

Try aluminum foil, maybe you could make ridges in it so dye could get in in certain areas and not in others. That might be interesting.

Try dipping a piece of cloth or a sponge in dye, and smearing it onto the head.

Try pouring dye onto the head, instead of dipping it.

Try to get a splatter effect similar to splatter paint, im not sure how this could be done, but i bet it would look cool.

Try the freeze dye method.

LatinBabe

flames anyone?

just imagine how cool that would be. or tie die where it has the wrinkles and blurs... i wonder how that could be done...

if you come up with how to do any of these you are a genious.

would it be possible to make a tie-dye one. i dont mean like a splatter, like a real tie-tye.

livin4lax09

no, its not possible

LatinBabe

if you are really, really, really dedicated i bet you could find a way, but that would take far more than any effort i would ever put in.

i guess if you just have all but a small portian of the head glued up and slowly work your way around the head (taking many days) un a pre-laid out pattern you could make tie-dye.

livin4lax09

you could find out a way, but I was saying it's impossible to tie dye the normal way.

crayons work because they give uneven coverage so its a sort of splotchy effect.

very true. but hey, willing to devote that much time to a single dye job brent?

tie dye would be a waste a time anyway. Theres not enough surface area on a head to make it look like tie dye.

I've always wondered if you could use colored Sharpie's on the head and how it would look and last, as an alternative for dying. Since they make Sharpies in practically every color, you could use it for detailed designs or maybe even saving a messed up dye job.

whats a sharpie??

Sharpie = permanent marker.
Im surprised you asked that question.

When i was little i tried coloring with sharpies on a head. It worked but didnt last and looked really bad.

Put dye in a spray bottle. Or one of those handheld pump srayers used for like fertilizer and pesticides. somehow use wire mesh or something and pour dye over that, which is above the head. probably wouldnt work, but ideally it would give an intricate checkered square pattern. Try vinyl dye. Alex (i think) mentioned it a few months ago. Its used for dying plastics and metals I believe. Would work real well and probably wouldnt fade. Supposed to be tough stuff.

I've seen a vinyl dye head. It just has a certain gloss over it, and it will never fade.

I tried RIT dye remover with reasonable results. I botched a three-color
dye job and ended up simply dying an Intrepid head black. I figured I'd
give the remover a try to see if I could get a different color. After two
tries at it, came out ok with a groovy marbled effect from the black over
scarlet red/golden yellow. The black dulled to a greyish color with marbled
swirls in it. It was enough to let me dye a black-red fade. Because it dark
underneath, the scarlet red came out more like wine red, but at least it
wasn't all black.

Something to try, a bright color underneath, then a "quick" dark color over
top as not to set it too deeply into the head, then a bath in remover. I'd try
it, but I don't have any spare heads to see what the effect would be.

Cheers...KLD

Really, where?

LaxGoalieLZ

I have seen a head that instead of using tape to cover up areas used vinyl. Ive never heard of using vinyl to get a gloss over the head.

Spray paint part of the head with reg paint. Then dye it and peel off the paint. You might be able to get a cool fade effect.

what would be coo lis like a lightning affect that fades to the other side of the head somehow...

You can see an example of something like a vinyl "dye" at STX's site. Go to the invasion section, then pick Custom techniques and you'll see a G-Force that looks like it is covered in blood.

Looks pretty cool, I'm not sure if it's vinyl dye or not, I don't think vdye has a rubbery texture like the guy mentioned. Thanks Sully for the citation, not too many people posted on that thread but maybe it will have an upsurge. I don't know much about paints, and that is probably why I haven't tried any vinyl dyes yet. My gf suggested that I talk to the paint guy at Lowe's/Home Depot, so I think I'll do that. I really want it to paint my computer monitor, but if I had an extra head lying around I could try it on that as well. From what I read in the computer literature, they say that it seeps into the plastic, not just coating it like paint. Given this nature, it's been said to not work too well with metal, since it can't seep into that, but there's been mixed reports on that front. One property which makes me wonder if that guy on the STX site used vdye or not is that it smells HORRIBLE, with many horrible cancer/AIDS/ebola causing chemicals. Another thing I've wondered dabbling in for lax heads is model paint. That stuff is supposed to be able to weather any storm, and you could paint intricate designs of all varieties with it.

the illusionistic dye reminds me of a car vinyl. it looks pretty cool
