I'm going to be a freshmen next year, and I've never tried out for a team, cause it's my first year, and I was wondering; what do you guys actually do at your highschool's tryouts?

we dont have high school tryouts but im sure theres going to be running, one on one, fast breaks, line drills, defense will have long field passing and offense will have a shooting drill and then probably a scrimmage

you do a lot of line drills (passing,gb's,ots, maybe shooting) then some game situations such as fast breaks, clears/rides, and then you just play and possibly run.

Tryouts vary from school to school and coach to coach. The important things to remember are to relax, have fun, listen and work hard. When a coach tells you something, listen to them, and respond, if you don't understand ask them to clarify. Coaches want to see that you're coachable.
The best bit of advice I ever got for tryouts is "If you don't know what to do, do it as fast as you can". Coaches love to see hustle, they know they can coach you how to do what they want, but they can't always coach hustle. So when ever you're on the field or in a drill give it all you have and work hard.
Enjoy.

I agree 100%. They do not expect young players to be great. They expect them to be coachable and "into being coached".
A player that dogs it duriong tryouts but has decent skills will not be as preferred as a player that is hustling and wants to learn.
Good luck.

Like everyone else has said, coaches LOVE hustle more than anything else. If they see you trying as hard as you can and listening to everything they say, you have a decent chance of making it. Coaches will always take a guy who hustles over a guy who dogs it during tryouts.

I wasn't really asking for help on what to do at tryouts.
While I do appreciate it, I'm more interested in what you actually had to do at tryouts.

Hmmm...What do I do at tryouts?....
--Everything the coaches tell me to--as fast, intense, and as precise as I possibly can.
My school had extremely rigorous tryouts for its athletic teams--basically we ran until we puked, or we'd play and run and play and run until the "non-hackers" a)would basically weed themselves out of the system, or b)would have to come to accept the idea that they might not get a ton of playing time.
It's also a good idea to arrive FIRST at all tryouts and practices, and don't be shy or afraid to ask coaches questions before or after practices. It really goes a long way, and coaches will see, understand, and acknowledge that you have the gumption to talk to them personally, and they will appreciate that you care, and that you want to improve.
Maybe I'm just traumatized from growing up every summer going with my dad to Bobby Knight's Indiana Basketball Camp. It has become engrained in me--but hey--I've certainly got some insane stories...

Sorry about the double-post--Italy's comment made it to the board JUST before mine did.
ADVICE--fitness, fundamentals and attitude are going to be very importrant (not in that order).
FITNESS--practice short and long distance running--full gear, ball and stick in hand
--practice fast footwork drills (5 spot drill) or jumprope
FUNDAMENTALS--hit the wall everyday for an hour. Both hands, quicksticks, switch hands, etc...the works...you need to perfect your fundamentals as absolutely best as you can.
--Work on stick protection, and keeping your head up at all times
--Some of the wallball hour can be used by shooting on a net (preferably with a goalie present)--make sure you are shooting with both hands, and on the run
--ground balls, ground balls, ground balls, ground balls
ATTITUDE--Compliment your teammates when they make a nice play, or put forth a worthy effort. Do NOT get down on people or be negative. Be friendly and social to your teammates, but don't let it distract you from what you are trying to achieve (every time you take the field)...

Every year we have 2 types of kids. The great athlete with no stick skills, and the knowledgable player with no athletic ability. dont be either of those kids
