I just watched the Rochester, Boston game on ESPN2 as well as watching many Delaware games and its pretty much a given that Alex Smith is one of if not the best face off men in the game. I'm a face off guy myself and i was wondering if anyone hear was familiar with the technique Smith uses. I hear the term "Pinch and Pop" all the time but does anyone know exactly how he executes the move?? . Thanks

Yeah, the plunger is his move.
But it's mostly about timing on the whistle. Im not taking away from his greatness. But if your not winning faceoffs than your not cheating...

he also sometimes grabs the ball with his hand (the hand close to the throat) and pushes it underneath his legs.

He uses the plunger. Check the faceoff tutorial sticky in the tactics and training forum if you want to learn how to do it.
i know this may be a little off topic, but i was wondering what head alex smith was using during the boston rochester game, just thought i might get a look at what others are using out there because i am a face off man myself and need a new head.

Im pretty sure he was using a regular blade but some people say that he has been using one of the new blades lately.

He used the Blade F-off a couple games ago and it seems like he switched back to the original Blade for the Boston game.

That's not Alex Smith. And he went about 50% against Hopkins. But there is more to that story. It gets me worked up so I'm not gonna give you all the details. But basically the Hopkins FO guys were jumping the whistle.

Oh my goodness no need to start a argumaent I just wanna state Alex Smith didn't do so well on the big stage and don't start making excuses like we jumped the whistle! This is the end of it, i just wanted my word in on it. DON'T QUOTE ME!:bye:
Dude, everyone knows Hops was "anticipating the whistle." Don't deny it. Hops cheated to win and Alex Smith got screwed in the process. Hopkins did what they had to do to ensure victory. Watch the tape. Opening face off of the third quarter you can hear the audio of Smith asking the ref to watch for it and sure enough Peyser jumps the whistle and the ref gets him. You watch every face off from that game and I assure you you will be able to see the Hopkins face off guys consistently going early.

Duck I agree with you. I think the refs should have paid more attention to JHU because when they jumped the were real early not like the move a fraction befor the whistle goes but about half a second before.

With the ESPN coverage on MLL, it is clear pretty much every faceoff there is a violation.
Smith is a great player but he is not the best

You may be right that on many face offs there are violations, but here's how I think of it. In football, a ref could call holding on a great number of plays. Some people say every play at the NFL level someone is holding. But it's up to the refs to make the call and assess a penalty when they need to and not just everytime they see a little jersey grab. Same thing on face offs. Some procedural rules can be bent, but when there's a blatant violation that needs to be called. And in the Hopkins-Deleware game that second part didn't happen.
