Hey guys I'm just wondering if there are any guys here thinking about or that have been in the US Navyor Naval Reserves... I am realclose to enlisting in the Navy Reserves and i'm thinking about what job to do. As of now I am enlisting as an Aviation Boatswain mate-handler... which is those guys that wear all yellow on TV. My job would be to launch and recover aircraft off of mostly aircraft carriers. If anyone knows about this job or any other sweet jobs in the reserves or just navy post. Just wondering if there were any sailors in here... Thanks.

Well, it's been a while. I was what they called a TD, a rating that was blended into AT, or maybe AW, years ago. Gee, it's not even listed at Wikipedia in the list of discontinued ratings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Navy_ratings#Discontinued_an d_changed_ratings). For all you know, I could be making this up. I'm not, though.
I gather you can select your occupation at the time you enlist, subject to your successful completion of that rating's "A" school. Is this correct? Have you taken the ASVAB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_Services_Vocational_Aptitude_Battery)? Which occupations are open to you?
Ratings, all of them (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:United_States_Navy_ratings)
My suggestion is that you sign up for the most difficult occupation for which you are qualified, the one that is the most selective. Further, you should think about what civilian line of work that your military job most resembles. Example:
I feel that the best MOS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_Occupational_Specialty) you could have in the Army right now would be that of translator, especially Arabic language translator. It's as close to a guarantee of lifetime employment as you can have. Similarly, if you choose a technical job, it could lead to engineering school. If you were a Corpsman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hospital_Corpsman), you could end up as an EMT or a physician's assistant, or maybe even go to med school. Get a load of this career (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Carmona): from Army medic to Surgeon General.
Tucson proud Richard Carmona one of its own (http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/daily/local/21262.php)
He was expelled three times from ninth grade in the Bronx; was a member of a gang, the Social Lords; and dropped out of school. He joined the Army and became a combat medic in Vietnam - leaving the Army after being wounded for the third time. He also earned his General Education Development degree (GED), signaling a turnaround in his life.
He earned an associate of arts degree at Bronx Community College and bachelor of science and medical degrees at University of California at San Francisco. At the University of Arizona, he earned a master's degree in health policy and administration.
So how did you do on the ASVAB?
