Treadmills are bad for your knees and joints. If you can get acess to an eliptical use that instead, your feet never lift up and its a better workout for your heart. If you can only use a treadmill use it wisely, don't use it if it hurts.

run outside at all time possible. When you can't, use the tread

Run on the surface your likely to run on for whatever sport your currently playing. If you play lacrosse on grass, run on grass. If you run cross country stick to whatever surface that is and so on. If you switch surfaces, you'll get shin splints and mess up your knees. If your treadmill has a lot of give, that's good because when you run on hard surfaces you absorb all the shock in your legs. So if your goning to run on cement or on a treadmill get a really good pair of running shoes.

run outside at all time possible. When you can't, use the treadListen to BT and me. If you're going to run, run outside. Run on the treadmill as a last resort. Barring inclement weather (e.g. thunderstorms, sub-40 or 100+ deg temp), run outside. If a few rain drops or some brisk air make you want to train indoors, you might want to reconsider if you have the character to play lax.

when your out side is it a better work out? this tread mill has inclineYes, running outdoors is harder. Don't underestimate wind resistance. The faster you run, the more air and wind resist (at an exponential rate).

Treadmills have incline, but most runners use very little incline if any at all. Also, running too much on inclines often messes up your running mechanics when you return to running on level ground.

Still don't believe us? Pick a set time, for example 9 min. Find a measured outdoor track like a school's 1/4 mile track. See how far you can run in 9 min. Run at about as fast as a pace you can hold for the entire time. 1 1/2 miles is 9 min is pretty good. Then do the same test on a treadmill (preferably not on the same day). You should be able to run significantly farther in the same amount of time on a treadmill. Nearly everyone finds treadmill milage easier than outdoor milage.

BTW, regarding elliptical trainers... They may be good for building up your aerobic base, but won't necessarily help you be a faster runner. The crossover benefit is limited like how swimming and bicycling don't improve one's running so much (although they are still excellent forms of exercise).

I was thinking endurance not pure running speed. If your looking to build speed, weights are important too.

ya stamina = heart rate.

for speed, jog on treadmill using full incline. this gives your muscles a workout but wont do much for cardio. thats sll treadmills are good for, except if the weather is bad and you cant jog outside.

We have an elliptical trainer at my house and honestly the thing is kinda...weird. I ran on it for about 2 hours while watching TV and listening to music and never once became *tired*, I sweated some, but my heart never picked up as much as it does while running and I didn't feel like I got too much out of it.

Crossfit is a conditioning program designed around gymnastics and Olympic weight lifting but also includes a lot of running, 400 meters, 800 meters, sprints, box jumps, and things you normally would not even think of doing like kettlebell swings.
It is very well thought out and the work outs are posted every day some take me 15 to 20 mins others take 1 hour or more.

It has made me fitter than ever.

Doing Crossfit for 2 years now I went from running 5K in 32:00 mins down to running it in 23:00 mins! It will make you way faster.

I swear by it and have seen the results.

www.crossfit.com will explain it better.

The first workout I tried nearly killed me and I thought I was in shape!

Thinking outside the box.....lacrosse is a game that is played in all three planes of motion: front to back (sagittal plane), side to side (frontal plane), and rotational (transverse plane). If you run on a treadmill you will only be running in the sagittal plane and in a controlled stable environment.

A sound training program will included exercises in all three planes of motion including cardiovascular training and weight training in an unstable enviroment (there is where stability balls, airex pads, balance boards, and dyna discs come into play)
