Yeah, basically you're gonna have to find a needle in a haystack. Rappers today just rap about how gangsta they are and how many hos they got on the corner.

PhishMeister

some of my favorite least explicit rappers/rap groups would have to be:

Jurassic 5
Mos Def
Kanye West
Beastie Boys
Jay-Z (less explicit than a lot)
Talib Kwali (dont think he is explicit, havent listened to him that much)

if you ever change your mind and suddenly listen to gangsta rap and all the other great stuff here is a list of my favorites:

Notorious B.I.G. (who could ever be better ?)
Lil Wayne
Snoop Dog
Wutang Clan
Tupac
Eazy-E
Dr. Dre

theres so much good rap out there.

Mista Hollywood

i dont suggest listening to talib, some of his non popular songs he swears so much

lacrossestud08
07-24-2007, 08:53 PM
I can't believe no one's brought up K-OS yet. I do agree with the suggestions so far, and for those that have been stereotyping and generalizing it's not hard to find non-explicit rap at all. While it's true most of the mainstream stuff you hear on the radio is full of explicit language, there's a lot of stuff out there that isn't...you just have to look for it.

Also, look back in time...a lot of the old school stuff isn't really explicit like in the 80s when it was just about rhyming and music and lyrics were everything.

Let me know if you need more suggestions.

HawkletLax, and Phish put up some of the greatest rappers of all times, they are great choices for anyone thats into rap its good to learn your stuff and listen to some real lyricists so when people say all rap is crap show them someone like KRS-One and they will realize what there missing.
I'm surprised no one mentioned A Tribe Called Quest there a amazing rap group that doesn't curse much, Pharcyde, Kool G Rap is a classic, Hieroglyphics (great rappers came out of that group such as Del the Funkie Homosapien), Eric B. and Rakim, Blackalicious, Big Daddy Kane.
along with the other ones that were mentioned they are some of the greatest rappers of all time along with being very non-explicit.

You could just get the edited version of rap cds. Kanye West is probably my favorite rapper because he doesn't really conform to the typical rap stereotype. He just drops some curses once in a while. I like Ludacris too, but he's not really clean.

So why do you want clean rap anyways?

not many good rappers do not swear in their songs, but i fi were you i would just try to kinda cancel them out if it is really that big of a deal, just wondering, why do you not want any cursing, if you can just ignore those words. But if you want some good rap listed just tell me and i will give some to you but, yeah dont avoid some amazing music because of some words, when i listen to rap, i dont listen to just the lyrics, i mostly, if not all, listen to the music only, because alot of rap lyrics do not have a meaning.

baseball, the words in question are looked upon by society as crude and taboo. say your in the car with your family, parents young children etc, and you have a cd with both explicit and clean music. i for one will skip over the songs that are explicit as to not expose younger children to that sort of language. repeated use of these words can instill acceptance of this language in some peoples minds. it is very hard to appear intelligent when swearing your arse off.

this is only a scenario but oh well, i believe its a valid argument on why just "ignoring said words" is not an acceptable substitute to wanting clean music

Gangstarr is Group not a rapper, Guru is the Rapper from Gangstarr.

For my recommendations:

Atmosphere
Brother Ali
DangerDoom
Murs
The Streets
Felt
The Roots
Mos Def

All have occasional swearing but all have some clean tracks. And they aren't gangstas that rap about slinging crack and killing poeple.

You know what? Rap was mostly non-explicit and non-provocative until the late 80s. Circa 1989-90, NWA came out w/ Straight Outta Compton and Public Enemy w/ Fear of a Black Planet. Gangsta rap took over from there and evolved into what we associate w/ rap & hip-hop today - that being gangbangers, pimps, ho's, etc. Add in 2 Live Crew also for their over-the-top vulgarity & sexual explicitness.

Early or old-school rap was very socially conscious. Most of the songs dealt w/ community unity, having a good time (block parties), the struggles of growing up poor in the inner city, or eternal subject of why ___ is the best & baddest MC around.

You might find their songs primitive, even humorous, but you can't deny these are some of the OGs who laid the foundation of rap. Keep in mind that they were working w/ the tools available 20-30 yrs ago.

Grandmaster Flash (the inventor of turntable scratching) & the Furious Five
Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force
Melle Mel
Sugarhill Gang
Kool Moe Dee
Eric B & Rakim
KRS-One
Run-DMC
Doug E Fresh
LL Cool J
Young MC
Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock

There certainly is modern rap that is socially conscious, just don't go turning on the radio to hear it.

Yo, the best thing that you could use to try all these artists out, IMO, is iTunes. I don't have Bearshare/Kazaa/BitTorrent or any of that crap, and iTunes is free to download off apple.com

Go to the iStore, and you can preview 30 seconds of any songs by anybody. And a bunch of the explicit rappers (Jeezy, Wayne, Three 6) all have the clean versions of their music as well as the explicit versions on there as well, so in case you're drawn to some of the bigger names and their music, you can listen to the clean versions of those songs as well. Lots of rap songs have clean versions, and Target and Wal-Mart and other big chains carry the edited albums.

As for whoever recommended Three 6, I hope you were being sarcastic. If you weren't, please listen to the Most Known Unknowns. You'll find all kinds of dirty stuff all over that track.

Hope this helps.
