To my great surprise, there have been announcements of a price drop of $50 coming in early august to the Xbox 360. There has not been an official statement made by Microsoft yet, but most analysts say it is going to happen and such :agree:

Here is a link to one site that reported on it:

So for once Sony doesn't copy yet starts a trend.(If anyone knows what I mean by Sony copies everything. For example, their 6-axis is a copy of the wii sensor)

Microsoft is not about to make a price cut. They're down about a billion from the extension of the warranty, all the costs of the repair, and the cost of reimbursement for owners that had to pay extra.

Sales are still good for the system, there's a ton of games, a new version of the console is coming out, and arguably their biggest selling point in terms of moving systems is coming out soon as well (halo 3). Anyone who thinks they're gonna cut the price now is on drugs or short a few brain cells.

they wont make one. they dont need to make one. they are the leading console in america and have a solid lead over the PS3. and sony is only dropping the price on the 60GB consoles to get rid of them. they are replacing them with a 80GB version. once they are all gone, the deals over

Ahahaha, this post made me laugh, anyway, i totally agree with you, Microsoft wants to squeeze every penny they can get, and i bet they will!

like i said when i posted before, this caught me completely by surprise, I didn't believe there would be one either. But watching CNBC this morning they mentioned it and that interested me enough to look it up online and I found a bunch of news sites reporting it. It may not happen, but I doubt all these news companies would report this without just cause.

Gamespot rumor control seems to think it may have some weight (based off the previously posted link), however anyone who reads their rumor control also knows that Microsoft never comments on speculation. It's possible, but I'm not exactly holding my breath, until it comes straight from the horses mouth itself.

they already lose money on every system they sell, why would they want to lose more. They make all their money off of the games

Um, more console sales = more game sales?

yea but then you need to take into account the amount off with how many more they would sell and how many games the average person buys and the added cost for repairs since there will be more systems and Im sure they will figure out what is best for them because they are pretty smart

thay were actually planning on implementing that in the ps2, but it didn't happen...

supposedly the loss of money from the xbox 360 was meant to happen as Microsoft is trying some marketing plan/strategy thing. I got that from wikipedia.

Anyway i'm totally psyched about possibly of a price drop. I've been saving money for a 360 and 50 bucks definitely help, even though it probably won't happen.

On a related note, the HDDVD add-on is getting a $20 price drop (making it $179, roughly what it launched for overseas) as well as doing a similar deal ala the PS3. By the unit, get to choose 5 free movies.

I see this as a response to the growing popularity of blueray with retailers and consumers.

Unfortunately, I don't think this will have the desired outcome as A) a $20 cut isn't enough to push someone on the fence between the two formats B) sony's movie offer is better for 2 reasons 1) the choices available are better and 2) you'll actually get your movies at some point! (toshiba's free movie deals are notorious for either not sending out movies at all or taking upwards of a year to ship out)

As for the speculation regarding the 360 price cut... Just because a walmart ad pops up showing a reduced price doesn't mean it's from a price cut. Walmart sells a lot of items at a loss to get people through the door. Most of these items are electronics (why do you think the electronics section is in the back, past every other aisle). It wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn that walmart was doing this just to undercut other vendors.

It could also be in response to the warranty issue. A similar move to sony's pricecut with the ps3. Seeing as how ALL 360's manufactured up to a month ago are literally defective, walmart might want a quick and easy way to get rid of a stock of those so they can refill with non-defective units. A stipulation of that $350 roll back price might be that no returns to the retailer are allowed and customers must deal with the manufacturer

Or, everyone could be wrong and there actually could be a price cut on the console which would go against every fathomable business concept considering their current financial and market standings as well as their rivals.

Rumored Proce Drop for Core & Elite (Premium not mentioned) looking to hold more water...at least as far as a recent Circuit City ad goes...

I'm glad it's looking to be more and more true (even if Microsoft doesn't have an official word on it yet..). I've been biding my time on pricedrops for the new consoles more than the last generation, and I essentially have the money for a premium should a price drop happen, though even then I'll still probably won't be getting one for several months anyways (hooray for expensive car repairs!).

Microsoft Pulls Trigger on Price Drop (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6176300.html)

So it's official, the core is $279, Premium is $349 & the Elite $449. Also for those wondering, the Halo 3 edition features a Spartan Green & Gold color scheme, HDMI, 20g HD, Wireless controller and a play & charge kit but no Halo 3 (it's being released to coincide with the new Madden) for $399.
