So yeah, I just got a really cool idea for a new dye I am going to try maybe on one of my truths, or my proton that I am getting in the next few days. My idea was to dye a head either bright orange, yellow, or green. After that, I would put drops of glue to make a phrase to look like one of those old "light bright" things. Any suggestions on the saying/ input?

no, black should be the first color done. that way you could peel off different tape dots so you could different colors as you peeled off different dots
if you did black last the whole head would be black.

no...
since black is the darkest color, you can't dye anything over it. if you dyed the whole head black first, and then tried to dye another part orange, it would still be black, maybe kinda dark brown.
you always have to dye from lightest to darkest or else you don't get what you want. and yes you're right, the whole head would be black if you did it last, but everything under the glue and stickers will be the color the head was before it was dyed to the next color.

lies! you would put the glue on first with what you want. then dye it all black. then peel off some glue and dye it a random color. Then you take off more glue etc.

exactly. the setup for your last black dye would take forever.
my way, after your first dye you would have a black stick with white dots (under tape), they would be easily dyed, and the black wont change. so you just peel off dots of tape for whatever color you want. after each lighter color dye just put tape or glue (easier) over the already dyed colored dots.
how would you apply the colors to the dots? the more i think about this, my way is really the only way to do it.
light to dark isnt a hard rule if you are using black. black wont so any other colors, so if you wanted to do black/red tiger stripe, you could do either color first. dye the whole head read, tape/glue and dye black = red/black tiger stripe
or you could tape/glue the head and the dye black. remove the the tape/glue and you have white/black then dye red = red/black tiger stripe

oh i see...
so the conflicting methods are....
put down some dots and dye it Black. then take off dots a few at a time dying in between so it ends up black with the colors you dyed progressively.
or
dye it like... say... yellow. then put down some dots. and dye it red. then put down some more dots and dye it green. then put down some more dots. and dye it black.
i'd say choose option A. it will look cleaner. eventhough if you did do a tie dye, then did dots EVERYWHERE, it would look REALLY sick. IMO.

yea, I was planning on fading four colors (yellow, pink, green, orange) around the head and putting glue spots on, then dyeing it black, but now I like speenny and xxlacrosse's ideas because that way I can have like an inner color and an outer color of my number (doing it all over the head). Example....dot out a bunch of 27's, dye it black, take off the glue on the outside of the 27, dip in a color, reglue, take off the glue on the inside, dye in a different color.
It would seem this dye would be very expensive (2 or 3 black packets, and 1 or 2 packets of 4 of the colors) so I was thinking I would do 3 colors and the black instead of 4, so any recomendations on the colors? Thanks for the input, and I will post up pics too. I am probably gonna get to this next week so be on the look out. Also if anyone has any other recomendations or suggestions that would help make this dye come out as great as imagined, post up. Thanks guys.

i'd go glue.

yea, I am going to glue up the head soon soo I will get it up here when that is finished so I can see if anyone thinks I should make any changes or whatever. Keep the comments coming....

ok hopefully you have not dyed yet because the thing about option A is that you cant put glue back on so the colors would mix unless you re applyed glue so you would waste a ton of glue no biggy though
what im saying is if you put down dots dyed black then took the dots you wanted off to do say yellow then left those dots off and took more dots off to dye blue the yellow would go darker so option B i think is smarter
aviator
08-03-2007, 03:20 PM
no, option a would work because I was going to just put a strip of electrical tape or glue over the color after dyeing it, only thing I was worried was the color would effect the black, but if I can get a nice black it wouldn't matter. I see your point SS, but I feel option a would work better

either, but stickers would be more uniformly sized

if i were you, once youve done all of the dots, cover all of them with glue and redye black over the head, because all of thwe colors might change the hue of the black
PS: only do this if the black looks slightly tinted from the brighter colors.

dye the head all black then do light dots so it actually looks like the board
aviator

xxlacrosse: good idea, but that is alot of dye....I am just going to wait until the black is very very black before I take it out, thanks for the input though, if it changes the color I will be sure to do that
amdadillo: yea, that was the plan all along.....
ss666: I know, that sucks, I hate when it happens, it only really happened to me once when I used pam on the head first, I put on too much and ended up just dyeing black over everything after washing it off. But yea, thanks for the advice...
oh, and I am either going to do this on a pinched warpath I am buying from a friend, or a pp if I get it in time. I will get the warpath monday, and the other head maybe this weekend, as soon as I get it, I will glue 'er up and post some pics before putting it in the dye bath. A few reasons for this: to get everyones input and advice on either adding more, fixing it up or whatever, and also, if anyone else wants to do the dye they can see how to start it off. Keep everthing coming.......
