Do they have to be retired to be on your list?

I think Sydney Crosby needs about 8 more good years, if that's what you're getting at...

I guess I'm just old-school...

And Bobby Orr > Wayne Gretzky. Don't let me tell you that, let Gretzky tell you that...

Derek Boogaard enough said....actually one more thing about him, he has his own Hockey Fight Camp. And yes, in the camp you skate around with boxing gloves on...

Not at all. He is good, but he is to young to be conciderd one of the all time greates.

I was thinking more along the lines of Sakic, Forsberg, Jagr, Heatley, etc etc.

I will go with:

Roy
Tretiak
Gretzky
Howe
Orr
Yzerman
Lemieux
Sakic
Jagr
Forsberg

It should probably be the top 10 players of NHL/North American all time. Because nobody has mentioned any of the players that featured in the dominant Soviet teams of the past.

Damn--I'll concede that point--I didn't think about old-school Soviets who didn't defect...

i definitely think that Jagr has potential to be on the list, and i think that Ovechkin/Crosby will be on that list someday.

My List:
1. The Great One
2. Mario Lemieux
3. Bobby Orr
4. Guy Lefluer
5. Mark Messier
6. Patrick Roy
7. Maurice Richard
8. Ray Bourque
9. Pat Lafontaine
10. Martin Broduer

Crosby and Ovechkin will each be on the list someday. But this is a list of the all time greats not just the great of our time. With time however, as I said before, they will be all time greats.

If you read my post, you would see that I have Tretiek as number 2.

And if you could ask Bobby Orr he would tell you that he wasn't half the player Gretzky was. Modesty among great stars like that is a big thing. Not too many players will say, "Well, I think I am better than him" or "I am the best ever", it just isn't something you say.

That said, Gretzky is the best hockey player to ever play the game.

Nobody's given Dominik Hasek any love?

It's really tough coming up with a top 10, with many different positions, different eras, etc.

The Dominator would probably be an honorable mention--but that's subjective, just like anybody's top 10 is.

I realize Gretzky's stats and numbers blow everybody out of the water, but if I'm running a hockey team, and I want to win the title, I'd take Orr before Gretzky. Gretzky had Messier, Fuhr, Coffey, Tikannen, Kurri, etc--for a supporting cast, and as for the Bruins' Stanley Cups--well--Bobby Orr won those--aside from Esposito, there wasn't much else there, really.

I know I'm biased since I watch my Bobby Orr highlight DVD on a weekly basis, but check out Bobby Orr on YouTube and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The Great One was also a bit of a great wuss--NOBODY messed with Orr...

I think the problem with suggesting Hasek (or any goalie) is that the goalie position is too hard to compare against other positions. That being said, I would totally put Olie on that list. Even though he plays for the Caps (who are my favorites, even though they suck), he moved up to make fans forget about Jim Carey (who had that great '96 season), become a permanent starter, and help lead the Caps to a Stanley Cup, where he had four shutouts in postseason play.

But regarding the top ten other positions, JAgr is a good offenseman, but he sure didn't do anything with caps, except make it impossible to buy anyone else's jersey.

1) Bobby Orr
2) Wayne Gretzky
3) Gordie Howe
4) Mario Lemieux
5) Phil Esposito
6) Mark Messier
7) Mike Bossy
8) Maurice Richard
9) Ted Lindsay
10) Guy Lafleur

Notables: Bryan Trottier, Eddie Shore, Jean Beliveau, Red Kelly, Pat Lafontaine, Stevey Y, Bobby Hull, Valery Kharlamov and Vladislav Tretiak (USSR), and of course... The Hanson Brothers...

I'm sure I'm missing a few, but c'mon, Jagr? Might aswell pick Lindros!!!

I dont think alot of people realize how amazing orr was and some of the unbelevable plays he made. I think he is no doubt #1. Also bobby and brett should be at least in the top 20. And how can so few people think ray borque should be top 10. Defense men get no attention these days. (this coming from a center)

its so tough to make a top 10. the nhl has been around for quite a while and there have been so many great players, so it is hard to say. but gretsky is number one, and messier, lemuiex, orr, richard, howe, and a couple others have to be the top 10-15

and how come ive only seen howe once or twice? he is one of the best ever and played till he was like 50 years old or something crazy like that.
