I know there are a few people on here who are fans of the The Receiving End of Sirens and if so, have you heard their new CD? If so, what do you think about? I'm reserving making any real review until I've listened to it a bit more, but the first listen wasn't too impressive. For those who don't know, the album is titled "The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi"

upon further listening, my opinion still holds that the CD is not as good as the first one, but only in the ways that made between the heart and the synapse amazing. First off, between is a mix of many different styles, but a good amount of mainly hard rock. Many have classified it as screamo, yet it hardly is. If you want to call it emo, hell be my guest, but if it is, then any other good music is emo as well. One listen to the evidence or planning a prison break should convince you otherwise. With that said... between is an instant rock-out album. It's got catchy beats and defined vocals, as well as smart lyrics, making constant use of alliteration and different word plays.
The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi is a whole different beast. If you're looking for the treos songs that echo the hard rock that you find on between the heart and the synapse, you will have a hard time getting into this album. It's toned down a lot. In fact, a lot of the time I was listening to the album, I couldn't help but think the songs were along the same line as "prologue" in the sense that they all sound like they are building up to the hard rock. But the songs in the earth don't go anywhere. Many of the early songs on the album are very melodic and calm, but very different from what you would expect from treos. A lot of this has been attributed to casey's absence, as he provided the defined vocals that a lot of their songs are known for
But this is not to say that it is a bad album. It is just a different album. I've heard people say "if you liked between the heart and the synapse, you'll love this" and it's definitely not true. You may like it, you may not. Fans of their earlier works such as their EP will probably not like the toned down music, as between the heart and the synapse was even a bit softer than their original works.
The lyrics are much safer, but still seem more meaningful than their first album. The Salesman, The Husband, The Lover is a perfect example of the change that they have gone through. While they no longer forming as interesting and creative lyrics, utilizing the english language in all its grandeur (we are the corp of corpses, we are all up in arms and armed), they seem a lot truer and more heartfelt.
For the most part, TREOS made a good CD. It is a lot more mature of an album, but a lot of people may long for the old sound back. TREOS sort of outdid themselves here by having such an incredible first album, which is hard to follow. Having seen them in concert, I am actually pretty surprised with this album, as it seems pretty distant from what they enjoy playing in concerts, with the hard rock being a very big part of what they do.
If you're looking for instant rock classics like planning a prison break, the evidence, and the rival cycle, you'll have to look elsewhere. Even one of the hardest songs on the album, saturnus, leaves a bit to be desired.
With all that said, still pick it up, because it's 10 dollars at best buy and they're all great guys. Support smaller bands. You can download all the mainstream stuff.
