View Full Version : >The Music Suggestion Thread<

So, recently I got a pretty nifty idea. I know alot of people on the forums who really enjoy music, myself included. Now we all have our own opinions on what is "good" and all have a sort of ideal band, so I figured this would be a cool idea to let one give a list of characteristics they want in a band, and have other people reply to them with a suggestion that fits the bill if they know of any. When giving a suggestion, quote the askers post so this doesn't become a mess.
I will give a quick example:
good, clever lyrics
a wide range of screams
heavy, powerful, and cool guitar/drum/bass sounds
"sing along" chorus
SO, lets keep this organized and clean, hopefully this will work, and help us all find that new "favorite band"
:bye:

Hmm, I like this thread. I've become extremely bored with my music lately.
I'm looking for a band thats heavy, but not like uber screaming stuff. I want it to be melodic, but also, like I said, kinda heavy. Sort of like staind or breaking benjamin. You know, deep lyrics are a plus too.
Umm, I've also been listening to modest mouse and the white stripes alot lately. Any bands like them anyone knows?

As for artists, I'd go with:
Killswitch Engage
-Amazing vocals
-Powerful lyrics
-Amazing band overall
-Recomended albums: The End Of Heartache, As Daylight Dies
Trivium
-Also great vocals and lyrics
-Sick solos
-Amazing overall instrumentals
-My overall favorite band
-I recommend Ascendancy (The Crusade was OK but Ascendancy was just flat out fantastic)

you kinda just described between the buried and me.
it's a little harder to find their melodic parts, but they're there.
check out their myspace page from the link i posted about and check out mordecai it's one of their more popular songs and it has the melodic part at the end.
check out their lyrics if you have the time too, VERY deep.
they also did a cover song of queen's bicycle race that is amazing. i'm looking for a youtube link.
EDIT: found it!

Trivium is great. They have a great scene in the movie smokin aces. The Tremors (hitmen) listening to trivium , great scene. I personally like H.I.M, unearth, and Lamb Of God.

Killswitch engage and trivium immediatly came to mind. Trivium is easily one of my favorite bands, Killswitch is up there too though.
Some softer, more emo-ish music that still has some good screams and awesome sing along choruses (chorusi?) is chiodos.

You may like the band Alexisonfire, they have screaming and then they have a guy with a great voice.
Also look into Silverstein's cd Discovering The Waterfront, it has screaming but also singing and its really catchy
The Sleeping is a really good band, not very heavy but theyre addicting, to me at least
As Cities Burn is a really good band, not many people know of them but theyre good.
Blindside is pretty heavy, catchy melodies and good lyrics.
And last but certainly not least my favorite band UnderOATH. Anybody who can play drums and still have a good voice is pretty sweet.

Thanks everyone! I already listen to trivium, killswitch, GNR, and VR, but hv, I checked out all those bands, and they are all good, so thanks. Murder, some of that music is just a little too heavy for me. I'm just getting into the heavier stuff, but I'm not there yet lol.
EDIT: Kinda random, but has anyone heard the new foo fighters single? The Pretender. Sooooo good, check it out.

really old Thrice is good, if you are into that stuff. identity crisis and Illusion of safety. i also recommend the bands Latterman and Against Me! (there album Reinventing Axl Rose is amazing)
does anyone in here like set your goals?

set your goals is okay, same with against me (punk gets kinda annoying if there is too much) but thrice is fantastic, good call
and alot of the bands listed above (ok, all the bands listed above) I listen too already.....haha
But good call everyone
and for people wanting to listen to trivium, their new cd is pathetic, there older stuff is amazing though

He speaks the truth. I mean, the Crusade is mediocre at best, but it sounds too much like Metallica. Go with Ascendancy, that CD is the best one I own. Ember To Inferno isn't bad, but if you are just getting into Trivium, get Ascendancy. That's my 2 cents.

The idea of this thread is not to just throw out your favorite bands willy-nilly whenever you feel like it, it's to respond with suggestions relevant to a person's request for musical assistance.
well you're not got gonna get many responses from people on this forum asking for what music is good, because for whatever reason it seems like everyone here has there favorite music- now that said, if someone comes on here and posts there favorite bands then someone may just check them out..but not because the requested it

Ok, I thought I'd bump this up. My taste in music has kinda changed recently, I'm into some of the harder stuff. My favorite bands right now are Shadows Fall, All that Remains, Drop Dead Gorgeous, and Five Finger Death Punch.

Now that you revived this thread:
Soilwork:
Probably my favorite band at the moment, they are a Swedish metal band that is pretty hard but also very melodic. They can shred but also play some great melodies, the singer is fantastic, just an overall amazing band. They just came out with a new album, but my favorite albums from them are Stabbing The Drama and Figure Number Five, although they are all great. Be sure to check them out if you are a metal fan, you won't be disappointed.
I also recommend these similar bands, they all rock:
Disarmonia Mundi (The singer from Soilwork is in this band too)
Children Of Bodom
In Flames

Anyone looking for deep, i mean deep, and amazing lyrics all the while rocking, check out the Receiving End Of Sirens. They have recently become my absolute favorite band. A lot of the words lyrics they use in their songs are very shakespearean, so they get hard to process unless you have knowledge of the language of the era. If you're looking for good melody with some heavy riffs and sick solos, check out Faktion. They recently dropped their label, but they are amazing.
